Description
Penguins Trade:
Pittsburgh frees up roughly $15m in salary this year and next while taking back two cheap serviceable players with upside making a combined $4.25m for this year and only Zadina and his $1.875m salary on the books for next year. Assuming the big 3’s window maybe has 1-2 years remaining, they use the cap savings to aggressively pursue a player(s) like Ryan O’Reilly and/or Vlad Tarasenko. Theoretically if all goes well the draft compensation required to move off of these contracts could end up being late picks in each round.

The Red Wings could certainly go without making a trade like this that will theoretically take them out of the running in next years fruitful free agent class after re-signing their own guys and having close to $12m tied up in Petry & Granlund who do not figure to be part of their long term plans. Would acquiring a 1st & 2nd be worth becoming unable to sign an attractive free agent next offseason?

Toronto Trade:
The Leafs certainly aren’t calling teams to trade away Topi Niemela but I’d bet they’re trying to move off of Matt Murray’s deal. Would acquiring two young defense prospects plus a top 40 pick AND dumping Murray’s deal be enough to pry Topi from Toronto?

To answer your question on Murray, gotta think it would easier to buyout Murray at 687,000 and 2.7m over the next two seasons. Leafs have so few prospects....gotta think they have to keep Niemela, He Liljegren are the only two young NHLers in the Leafs system, and that's assuminging Niemela is going to be an NHLer.

If I’m the Leafs I’m gonna try and save every penny I possibly can so avoiding a buyout at all costs would be a priority to me.

Personally, I think the value is very fair and attractive for TOR to make this sort of deal. Idk how they view Niemela but, I myself am quite fond of him so, I wouldn’t personally trade him. But I’d be ecstatic as a wings fan to land him considering how high I am on the player.

Leafs don't need the "pennies" this year, but next year might be different. But I'm in the camp that Nylander is not going to be resigned, nor Matthews....so cap may not as issue next season. But your trade proposal certainly was fair for both teams

Murray is most likely heading to LTIR all of next season. That’s why he wasn’t bought out. Leafs aren’t paying to move cap they don’t need to move

This isn’t really designed as a “pay to move” sort of deal, it’s just a singular component of a deal with other moving parts.

Also, does Murray even have a legitimate injury that will put him on LTIR as a certainty next year? It’s not like this is a Carey Price type situation here.

He was concussed in the Florida series, I believe, and Samsonov was injured earlier, hence Woll played many playoff games in the spring. But in the the final game, Murray was back on the bench. So I don't think the Leafs can think he's gonna be on LTIR at the start of the season. But geez, it looks like when he be LTIR sometime during the season, but you can't go into the season "hoping" he's going to get injured.

He has a long injury history, something is bound to be reaggravated. Frank Servalli already reported he’s more likely headed to LTIR
