They could still get EK and a Goal Scorer

Description
Having a little fun with a 3 team trade to bring in EK and Tarasenko.

SJ and ANA each eat 25% of EK's contract and get pieces in return.

Teuvo is the main piece that has to go back to SJ because of cap. Honestly not sure what they would require after that. Cost does go down some because they are not eating more of his cap hit.

ANA main piece that has to go back is Skjei, other pieces can change depending upon what ANA truly wants by being willing to eat 25% of EK's cap hit for 4 years. Also helps them get to the cap foor a little more for this upcoming season.

Acquiring EK would get rid of the TDA deal that is in place, allow us to sign a scorer, bring in a 4C, have some money for depth signings and have some cap left.

Point is that they could still get EK as reported still after today and sign a true scorer. Wether it is short term or long term with the way the cap is projected to go up.

Why is ANA getting a super similar (debatably better)return while they are giving up no players and taking less salary cap?

They take 25% of his cap the same as San Jose. The main pieces were based off what both San Jose and ANA would potentially want roster wise right now ( not saying the prospects or Dury is what either team would want, that is interchangable). ANA would want more because its 4 years of cap at 2,875,000 they would be eating. Also the cap casualties of Skjei and Teuvo were needed to address what I feel the Canes look to do ( reported short term offer earlier today to Tarasenko).

Don’t think you’re getting a second team to eat 4 years of retention. The return to ANA isn’t bad but that’s a long time.

Actually, with the Pittsburgh rumor from earlier, the Athletic reported from a Pens source that a third mystery team was involved in a 3 team trade talks with the Pens and San Jose. So its is very very possible whether its ANA or another team. I just choose ANA because of their cap situation and window, in particular with the cap rising substantially next season hopefully.

Got ya. Hasn’t read that yet but makes sense. Did they say it was for further retention on EK or just another team where assets/contracts can be moved around for additional flexibility? Like is it to dump granlund for example to create space or is it to launder EK cap hit.

Heres the quote. "Dubas engaged in talks with San Jose’s star (and very expensive) defensemen Erik Karlsson, a team source who requested anonymity so they could speak freely confirmed to The Athletic. A deal to Pittsburgh, which now appears more unlikely following the spending spree that followed, would have been complex and included a mystery team along with the Penguins and Sharks."

As you can see it doesn't state whether its retention or assets/contracts. Could be looked at either way, but I understand your point as well. Its a long long time. With my proposal, San Jose could eat more and get more out of it. Just from what I've read is that Grier doesn't want to retain half of EK's contract which is why I went the path that I did for EK.

Makes sense. Griers stance doesn’t really make sense. If he eats closer to half he’ll get more teams in and get way more for EK. They’re not going to come out of the rebuild until year 4 anyways and by that point the cap will have gone up so % taken by retention won’t be as significant. Seems like he’s a bit short sighted unless I’m just not seeing his rationale.

I agree with you on Griers stance. He hurt himself a little more today buy other potential suitors going elsewhere for their Offensive defenseman needs / spending money on other parts of the roster. Typically I feel like Orlov's signing would take us out, but as you know DW keeps pushing for EK and who knows what else. Since Orlov is meant for Skjei followed by Nikishin.
