Carolina doesn't have the cap as your trade is presented to go through with that as it stands as of this moment. More money has to be moved and the retention has to be larger whether thats with SJ or a third team.

Opening Night Lineup
Leafs would want a RD to start for sure. But it would be more of a hockey trade not involving more roster pieces looking at the Leafs cap in particular if they sign Domi and still need to re-sign Samsonov. So Pesce + prospects / picks. With contract talks not going anywhere for either team right now it would benefit both teams to address a need. Pesce hit is easier if we acquire Karlsson also.

Not going to lie, but your Carolina trade is one of the more realistic ones I have seen yet. I think they would do that if we get EK, but not with the 1st rounder.

Its a Pens fan who made a Sharks ACGM instead of a PIT one. Silly to me when involving the Pens and Sharks.

EK and new 3rd line
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac555</b></div><div>No disagreement from me, but full roster right now has $4.1m in space. 12F / 6D and 3G. Add in Tony D mean less than $1.6m. Pesce ($4m) + Skjei ($5.25m) + Drury (925k) + Turbo ($5.4m) are all tradable assets.</div></div>
I agree on all those assests, as I traded them in my latest ACGM to bring in EK and a scorer on a short term deal. My hope is that the EK deal would nix the TDA deal. Tomorrow I feel is going to tell a lot.

EK and new 3rd line
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac555</b></div><div>Cap friendly still has a few AHL contracts and 3 goalies on the list. The Canes actually have 5m in cap space with both Skjei & Pesce on the roster.
Assuming one (if not both) Skjei and Pesce are included…they have space available for a retained EK + depth signings.</div></div>
We will have to factor in all 3 goalies for this upcoming season, to be able to take on PK's full cap hit if he was to go down then come back up.

EK and new 3rd line
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>brgh4life</b></div><div>How do you figure? You have less than 3 mill in cap space.</div></div>
Canes have a little over 4 million in cap space. Cap friendly has quite a few of our AHL forward prospects on the main roster from the playoff run. When you factor in the Coghlan Qualifying Offer, we have around 3.5 give or take. My opinion he figures the Canes over Pittsburgh is because the prospect pool that we have compared to the Pens. Also with the signing of Orlov, it all but spells that one if not both of Skeji / Pesce will be traded which would free up more cap space with one traded and in particular if both were traded so we could also make room to bring in a scorer along with EK.

They could still get EK and a Goal Scorer
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>vikhodush</b></div><div>Makes sense. Griers stance doesn’t really make sense. If he eats closer to half he’ll get more teams in and get way more for EK. They’re not going to come out of the rebuild until year 4 anyways and by that point the cap will have gone up so % taken by retention won’t be as significant. Seems like he’s a bit short sighted unless I’m just not seeing his rationale.</div></div>
I agree with you on Griers stance. He hurt himself a little more today buy other potential suitors going elsewhere for their Offensive defenseman needs / spending money on other parts of the roster. Typically I feel like Orlov's signing would take us out, but as you know DW keeps pushing for EK and who knows what else. Since Orlov is meant for Skjei followed by Nikishin.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>vikhodush</b></div><div>Got ya. Hasn’t read that yet but makes sense. Did they say it was for further retention on EK or just another team where assets/contracts can be moved around for additional flexibility? Like is it to dump granlund for example to create space or is it to launder EK cap hit.</div></div>
Heres the quote. "Dubas engaged in talks with San Jose’s star (and very expensive) defensemen Erik Karlsson, a team source who requested anonymity so they could speak freely confirmed to The Athletic. A deal to Pittsburgh, which now appears more unlikely following the spending spree that followed, would have been complex and included a mystery team along with the Penguins and Sharks."
As you can see it doesn't state whether its retention or assets/contracts. Could be looked at either way, but I understand your point as well. Its a long long time. With my proposal, San Jose could eat more and get more out of it. Just from what I've read is that Grier doesn't want to retain half of EK's contract which is why I went the path that I did for EK.

Actually, with the Pittsburgh rumor from earlier, the Athletic reported from a Pens source that a third mystery team was involved in a 3 team trade talks with the Pens and San Jose. So its is very very possible whether its ANA or another team. I just choose ANA because of their cap situation and window, in particular with the cap rising substantially next season hopefully.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>wi11dabeast</b></div><div>Why is ANA getting a super similar (debatably better)return while they are giving up no players and taking less salary cap?</div></div>
They take 25% of his cap the same as San Jose. The main pieces were based off what both San Jose and ANA would potentially want roster wise right now ( not saying the prospects or Dury is what either team would want, that is interchangable). ANA would want more because its 4 years of cap at 2,875,000 they would be eating. Also the cap casualties of Skjei and Teuvo were needed to address what I feel the Canes look to do ( reported short term offer earlier today to Tarasenko).

Seeing all the spectulation which Im onboard with the EK train, but Nikishin will not be part of a trade. Orlov signing at 2 years is a further sign that when that contract is up, Nikishin will be slotting into Carolina's defense.

Leaf Summer Makeover
Drop everything from the Leafs side apart from Nylander, drop Necas from the Canes side and start over on the trade. Necas isn't going anywhere at this time unless he was part of a package for a la Matthews for example. Necas is cost controlled for next season, just had a career year and should only improve next season.

This is completely unrealistic from the Canes perpsective. Toffoli at the right price would be great with the Canes, but Pesce for Toffoli straight up is a no.

With the want for Carolina to get bigger overall, my opinion is that there are better options for our 3rd pairing defensive opening who meet the getting larger and physical aspect in potentially the same cap range as Kulak. This Canes fan say CAR declines.
