If you're trading for Nylander... Because of his cheap cap hit, you're going to be dealing at least 1 player that you would feel uncomfortable dealing... especially if extension is included

So you're saying Newhook, who the Habs see as a player ready to boom, is not that guy? We just traded a 1st and a 2nd for him less than 1 week ago.

Yes... IDK who that player would be but it would be far more than Newhook. Especially bc people are viewing him as the next Tyson Jost

Did you just say cheap cap hit and Nylander in the same sentence. The guy who wants 10m. Lol

Thanks for sharing your perspective. Are you open to reconsidering? Let's talk it out in terms of draft pick value.

Last year the Leafs traded Sandin to Washington for Gust & a 1st. Harris is more or less equivalent in value, let's say a late 1st for Harris can be expected.
Habs just traded a late 1st and an early 2nd for Newhook.
    2026 1st should be considered a late 1st.

So if we do the math in terms of value it's 3 late 1sts and an early 2nd. That's how Habs fans would see it at least.

The problem I have with Nylander is that his next contract will be massive and kick in at 28 years of age and last until his 36 y/o season. There aren't very many players who are still effective in their mid 30's.

IMO the only teams that should be looking to add Nylander are those that either want a 1 year rental or have cup aspirations for the next 3 seasons because those are when he'll be worth his next deal. The 5 or 6 seasons after that he will likely become a progressively more inefficient.

He's currently at 6.9 mill... for 40 goals, that's really valuable

I find the criticism fair. For my deal to work you have to believe in the upside of the 2 players. If Leafsfan98 doesn't believe in Newhook or Harris' upside, the deal for sure falls apart.

No doubt. That's why we are paying 3 late 1st round picks and an early 2nd for him.

That's fair... The thing is; it's about quality, not quantity. As an example, let's just say, you were selling on Caufield and 2 teams (Let's just say the Wild and Red Wings for simplicity sake) offer you something different: the Wild offer you 2 late 1sts and a reclamation project for Caufield and the Wings offer you Kasper + late 1st (Again, just as an example).

    Which one would you take?

    That's my point

I know you Leafs fans love analytics. You can see both players just need a chance to take the next step.

To say Newhook is ready for a top 6 role is a VERY big guess. I just posted in another thread, don't expect this to be as quick of a fix as Dach was. I really hope Newhook works out, but you can't just trade him as a proven commodity. He was given a lot of top 6 opportunities with us last year and frankly his underperformance was a big reason we got knocked out in round 1. Sorry to be the Debbie Downer, but I think you're gonna have to work on Newhook for a year before he becomes tradable.

I hear you. You no doubt need to believe Newhook is a 60 point player in a top 6 role or this deal falls apart. I truly believe he is, but does Tree?

Fair commentary. He has not done a ton to prove it, but I was figuring the Leafs would rather have a roster player with upside than a prospect with upside.

And Montreal doesn’t need Nylander this year. Trading for him would be dumb. Get him to a deal in FA if they really want him
