The Matthews contract was a bit off but it could have been worse

Ok well I had Matthews not signing tbh but the 3 others...so hard as I think its dominoes...I feel like lots is gonna happen like Matthews will get the C this year or next, its his team...I think Treliving wants him to be THE guy...also depends on results ya? Like if they go to the Final or win they will just open the vault...

If they don't make round 3 or more...
Nylander plays out season and signs in San Jose for 7 years and 65M (scores close to 50 in 2024/25)
Marner is traded to...maybe Nashville, Columbus, Chicago or Detroit...extends for 8 years and 12.5...yep 100M
Tavares will make a point of extending and showing his love and loyalty for Toronto...hmmm...3 years 10M...he wont do a Spezza for sure

If they make final or win cup...
Marner same deal as above but with Leafs
Nylander still leaves and probably gets way more then above...7 years and 80M
Tavares still the same as above but probably not till following year

That was fun hahaha

Gonna be another big drama year...love it!

As a Leafs fan, do you really want to sign Nylander to this deal? He would be 35 years old in the final year of this deal, almost 36, making that much $.

I think Tavares' next contract will be in the range of $3.5 million AAV or lower.

We ALL know what Matthews' signed for.

As for Marner, could you imagine if he has a higher AAV for the 2025-26 season than McDavid? That is funny to think about.

LOL at how badly this has aged.

Looking more like:

Auston Matthews - 13.25m x 4
William Nylander - 11.5m x 8
Marner - 13m x 8
JT - 5m x 3

I am hoping they just go year to year with JT. He's trending closer to 3rd line winger at this point and I wouldn't give him $5m...but who knows.

He's 76th among forwards in points. With 32 team just basic maths that there are 96 first line forwards. So he's scoring at the top line rate, at worst he's a second liner. He's also 2nd I'm the league in faceoff win %.

On the open market this summer he's still a $7M+ forward.

But after another season...at his age...and assuming more decline...that's not something you commit 3yrs to at $5m. At least I don't.

Fair enough. Hopefully not too much decline.

Ideally he can change his game as he ages and become more of a defensive center like Spezza. He's a wizard on the dot so as long as he becomes defensively responsible he could be a great 3C for a few more years.

I mean....I think we got decent enough value out of his contract for 4-5 years of the 7yr deal. $11m is rich for what has been a point/gm player but that was the cost of bringing in a player with his pedigree.

In hindsight...do you think we would have been better off NOT signing Tavares, keeping Kadri as the 2C (I know his wires crossed too many times in the playoffs for us to put trust in him)...and then being able to re-allocate $6ish million elsewhere over the last 5 years?

I liked Spezza on the Leafs but he was no defensive center as JT will never be
