As much as most Avs fans dislike it, MacDermid is valued by the FO. They could really sign any number of guys, But figured the 3 scratches to start the season would be 1 forward and 1 defenseman with MacDermid serving as a swing since he plays both.

The important part is that they need to spend all of Landy's LTIR by opening night or they lose the ability to spend that money during the season.

i'm sure they'd be fine with bringing timmins back, they didn't want to trade him to begin with but when you're handcuffed with no goalie you gotta sweeten the deal. If you hate Sundqvist, that's fine. This is more about maximizing the cap space they have available in season. The Avs will be starting the season using the LTIR exemption. When they do that, the LTIR money they are allowed to use in season is capped at what they go over the cap to start the season. So the Colton and Meyers contracts plus any additional adds need to put the Avs as close to the cap as possible. Avs can always downsize from 23 roster spots after maximizing their use of LTIR to start the season.
