Tanev, One-Year Deals, and a good AHL Team

Created by: ashleyschaeffer
Team: 2017-18 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 27, 2017
Published: Jun. 27, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
We have a ton of cap space this season and unlike Arizona, our owner isn't a cheapskate. Pegula won't mind paying out massively overpriced one-year deals for some vets to get back to the playoffs. That also means Rodrigues, Baptiste, Fasching, Bailey, Nylander, Smith, Malone, Guhle, Borgen, and Ullmark play in Rochester and hopefully make a deep run in the Calder Cup playoffs. Signing Chris Mueller (Buffalo native and top-5 AHL scorer last season) will help with development. Eating Clowe's contract for Gorges and retained salary on Moulson to make it closer to Clowe's cap hit this year and the Devils would only have him for $3.5 next year. I know giving up draft picks is not our style, but we should be a playoff team in 2018-19 and so giving up a 2019 1st rounder to a team that is just starting their rebuild will hopefully be enough to get a shutdown defenseman on the roster.

Don't really love this. Kane will be traded, although I'd prefer to keep him and Williams came out and said he wants to go to a cup contender which Buffalo isn't for the term of his 1 year contract. Doubt Vets like him and Vanek would take 1 year deals to begin with.

Vancouver says no... That first rounder isn't worth it for Vancouver as by 2019 the Sabers will probably be decent and that pick will probably be a late first rounder (Tanev is definitely worth more than that)

A 2018 AND a 2019 might do it.

Don't see NJ spending all that dough on two guys that are overpaid and not wanted by Sabres.
