So after one season the Leafs are out Sammy, Timmins and a 1st rounder. In return they get Samberg because there is no way they can re-sign Helly or Shif, Idk if that's very logical.
A Stanley Cup run with the depth and talent of this lineup would change your mind quickly.
Samsonov is going to Arbitration - he will get a 1 year deal worth around $4m and then be a URFA - I would rather have Hellebyuk for 1 year than Samsonov.
Schieffle for Nylander is a hit - yes - BUT - if Schieffle re-signs and isn't a pain in the ass as he has been in WPG - then he will be signing for somewhere around the current $6m tag - possibly LESS, not $10m like Nylander is looking for. Plus, with him at 2C - that allow JT to play the wing and Domi to be 3C which is AWESOME depth down the middle!
Timmins for Samburg is simply need for need. - Leafs don't need an offensive RD bc we have Klingberg to do that. The Leafs DO need a youthful replacement for Giordano - Samburg fits the bill and is an inexpensive replacement at that.
The 1st is comp for the salary retentions on Schieffle and Hellebuyk
From WPG's perspective:
They NEED a new face of the franchise - Nylander is that. They also need a top line right handed scoring threat - again - Nylander fits the bill. Nylander could sign a long term deal with WPG - if they go to his apparent $10m salary level on a long term deal. Playing with Ehlers, Perfetti, Connor, Vilardi, Nioedereitter... is NOT a HUGE step down from who he is playing with in Toronto (overall anyways) so the likelihood of his production staying where it is at is indeed likely. A drop off like he would find if he goes to say ARZ or NAS or SJ for example (he only has a 10 team no trade list - ONE of these types of teams is sure to NOT be on his list and thus a possible trade partner for the Leafs if he were to choose NOT to go to WPG).
WPG also needs a right shot RD with some youth - Timmins fills that void.
Samsonov comes in at a lower cap hit - and could sign a longer term deal for less that the $6m Hellebuyk is currently making - never mind the $9m+ he will be making come next year - and with the WPG defense corps... Samsonov will be more than adequite.
Gain a 1st for 1 year of retentions on Schieffle and Hellebuyk... that's a great return for contracts you would be paying for anyways.
