What are we talking about exactly? Drastically downgrade while taking two cap dumps, a D who looks like he won’t crack it past a third pair option and a first? Can you explain why the Canes would actually do this? I absolutely get why the pens do, but struggling to comprehend how this helps the canes whatsoever.

Woops someone pointed out I didn't have the Petry retention in this one, my mistake (made a Canes version of this trade).

Sorry I didn't have the Petry retention, not sure why you say he'd be on the 3rd pairing, he's definitely still a top 4 guy, just not the #2 Pens we're hoping he'd be/he's paid to be at 6.25

Was talking about Smith. He’s looking more and more like a bust and I think best case he becomes a sheltered third pairing guy who can pitch in a bit offensively.

With retention Petry is fine but I’d still have pesce for one year than him retained at 2 when looking at the rest of the package. Only reason to move on from pesce is to get a younger cost controlled D or an upgrade. This offer doesn’t meet either.

Would you prefer Joseph over Smith?
I think both are interchangeable in terms of value, just very different styles. Smith had a great 9 games for pens last season, they just didn't have the cap flexibility for him to be up full time. I saw this as adding a cost controlled D but Joseph might be more your likeing. In the same way Petry gives you another cost controlled season at RHD.

Nope, not really interested in either of them or the framework of this deal whatsoever, don't think there's much that you'd realistically want to include that would make the Canes think about this proposal. Would also rather still keep Pesce for one year versus Petry for the second year. Morrow will likely need a spot on the right side next year anyways. POJ and Smith don't really have a spot over here as they'd be behind our own prospects in terms of depth chart so we wouldn't value them much.

They still wouldn't take that deal lol. They'll fetch a far better return for Pesce.
