Description

FINDING TRADE COMPS FOR BIG BAD MIKE HOFFMAN((or trying to at least(suggestions are very much welcomed))

Mike Hoffman-33yo LW
2022-23 14+20=34 in 67 with a -10
Former high level top six winger with scoring upside.

Lars Eller->Colorado for a 2nd(just took a few pills)

Evgeny Dadonov->Dallas for Gurianov(wouldn't mind a young underperforming guy, bit wouldn't solve forward surplus and Hoff played at better pace than Dadonov)

Paul Stastny->Winnipeg for Dahlstrom+4th(traded at full $6M after 38pts in 71gp)

Carl Soderberg->Arizona for Kevin Connauton+3rd
traded at ~$5M deal, ~3.5M exchange. Points similar, age similar.

Blake Coleman->Tampa for Fotte+1st.
This one isn't realistic, but used to gage ceiling trades. Younger player, yet similar production. Hoff obv won't be getting close to that, but it's a good gage.

Feb 28, 2023 Gustav Nyquist(33yo C after 22pts in 48gp) is traded to the Wild for a 2023 5th.

Semi-Delusional Excuse:
Hoffman atm has been producing more, which should about even out with Nyquist's defensive game and him being a center. They're the same age, and at 50% they're only $500,000 apart(Hoff being less). Team doesn't really matter, but it should be a slightly underperforming team like St. Louis, Ottawa(obv not happening),
Buffalo, Calgary(if they're not in full rebuild mode), Islanders, Flyers, Lightning... not saying they're fits, just that they're in sorta similar places Minnesota was.

2023 vs 2024 might affect value.

Very Delusional Excuse:
Now, we all know how awful this trade was. But, and I explained it a bit in the 1st trade comp, it's possible. Not only did Hoffman outperform Carter, but he nearly doubled it in 27 more games.

Defense, yes I know that's the caveat(and I'm not expecting Carter trade level return, but this is the high benchmark (a little emphasis on the high part)

He really wasn't impressive. If the Habs can get a team to take on $1M using a 6th or D level prospect, I'm all for it. I don't think this return is too far off.

Can we just run Hoffman on the top line to show teams he still has it, bloat his numbers and see if it’s possible to get more for him?

Hoffman has to cooperate and actually score semi-consistently for a change, but sure. The other alternative is most Habs forwards are injured by November, and Hoffman is by default a top 6 guy along with Suzuki and some AHL callups until the end of the year ...

Best case would be retaining 50% - some contender looses a shooter to injury and need a PP2 shooter and come calling. Even then though I think you're lucky to get a 3rd

50% retention we could prob get a 3rd from "pick a year" if he's semi-productive and healthy. We were told Eddy was a dump that needed picks attached to him and we all know how that turned out.

The Blues have zero use or cap for Hoffman.

oh yeah, a 3rd would be a gamble for nearly any team. Just showing he's not as bad as everyone says he is.

Didn't say he'd be going there, that's the type of team that was similar in the trade comps.

I'd bet interested teams(I hope there are any) would want to see him on a line without the number bloater duo.

End of day, 50% for a 3rd+conditional 5th/6th(_ playoff gp->4th) would be a dream
