can be a deadline deal if needed, can't see them riding out the season with him

that’s fair. my major concern with this is the lack of certainty next year. you have all ur d -2, starting goalie, and the entire first and third lines. huge risk of losing a bunch of them and major regression. obviously none of that matters if they complete the quest.

Agreed. I'd expect them to get Pesce and Domi under contract mid-season if I had to guess. Maybe Brodie if he'll come back cheap. Then it leaves Bertuzzi, Novak, Duclair, as really notable UFAs (Klinger isn't coming back here), and if we brought back at least one of Duke or Bertuzzi I'd be ok with how things shake out.

And I mean again - we lost major UFAs this year and just replaced them with new ones. Toronto seems to be a good destination for UFAs to come for a bit and up their next pay stub, so as long as we got another cycle of good short term UFAs again it could be fine to lose some of these players.

even with all that, it leaves matthews expiring with tomasino needing a large raise. plus no starting goalie (woll might be ready in 2 years to take over but next season seems rushed). any way they shake it, lots of negotiations happening in the next couple years

I'm assuming as of now that all the reporters and insiders saying there's nothing to worry about and Matthews will have a new deal before camp are true. RFAs are at least under control. Agree there's some risk, but we've also got to swing for some fences. And I don't think it's entirely unmitigated, but agreed. High cap projections should help keep some guys around as well.

tomasino is like the #1 interesting piece in this deal for Toronto, the base package would have to include Tomasino + 1st + something else

NSH isn't interested in Robertson. His injury history is too much of a concern I think for most teams to take the gamble on.

For NSH, you would get one of Tomasino or Novak. Not both for Nylander and as I've said before Nylander signing a deal would have to be part of the deal for NSH to even consider it. Part of my concern is how will Nylander fit in with NSH as a team and who will actually keep up with him for Nylander to continue producing at the 30-40 goal/70-80 point mark given the quality difference in team. The other part is about how Tomasino will produce and will he take his next step. His development thus far has kind of been crap playing under Hynes and despite this he was producing at a 50 point pace last season bouncing back and forth between NHL and AHL while playing for a coach who didn't want him. He is just about to turn 22 and if he gets top 6 minutes this year, with a coach and system that is actually good, he may put up a 50-60 point season and he can really only go up from there. If that happens NSH could like sign Tomasino to a better deal where he is part of NSH's core for a long time.

If NSH was actually in a spot to compete then sure, but NSH isn't. Realistically, a deal could work, but it likely won't.
