No Need To Trade Nylander

Created by: dannibalcorpse

Description
This board has been overflowing with Willie Nylander trade proposals, all of them slightly more unbelievable and terrible than the last. Everyone seems to justify it by saying "well the Leafs can't afford him!!!!"

Here's the thing: they very easily can.

First, sign Matthews. Duh. Rumors have him looking for 4 or 5 years at $13.5M so he can get another bite at free agency with a $100M cap. Fine. Take it. He's worth it.

Nylander has been rumored to be looking for a $9-10M AAV. Split the difference, give him 8x$9.5M. Done.

You -still- have $21M left to fill out the rest of the team after paying those two guys. So let's bring back Ilya Samsonov at 4x$4.5M. We can pretend Tyler Bertuzzi is gonna love the Leafs, and he sticks around for 4x$6M. Timothy Liljegren takes the leap and gets the Noah Dobson RFA bridge deal at $4M AAV. There's STILL $6.5M left.

Now it's just filling in at the edges. Keep Sam Lafferty around and build a shutdown 3rd line with Jarnkrok - Kampf - Lafferty. Hope that Nick Robertson has fully healed and run a kid line of Robertson - Holmberg - Hirvonen to start integrating some young guys on cheap deals into the forward group.

After that, all you need is some D depth. Picked a pair of guys that complemented their partners (Ghost brings offense to a pair with McCabe; Kulikov brings veteran presence to a pair with rookie Niemela) but I'm sure there are other Toronto-area players I'm forgetting that would be willing to come home on a sweetheart deal.

23 man roster. All the big names retained. With cap to spare.

The Leafs don't need to give Willie Nylander away.

Thank you, louder for the people in the back.

I think you might be a little light on Bertuzzi, but he can be swapped out for a couple of guys who make close to that.

But the legendary "real" leaf fans Max Borjshlapsky says they have to give him away for hardly anything? And all Cane fans tell us that Pesce is worth more than Willy? How can that be?

Nice work sir, we need more of you

Yeah, for the non-Matthews/Nylander guys it was more about illustrating what types of contracts could be fit, as opposed to trying to make sure the value matched up correctly. Whether it's Bertuzzi or someone else, I'm sure you can get a very good LW1 to put next to Matthews & Marner for that $6M AAV - same goes for Ghost at LD2,

I would imagine it's Domi who is retained for like 4.5M (or some other player) or and Samsonov (if retained) probably takes the 5-6M. I could see Klingberg getting a 6Mx5 deal if things work out too and maybe they go cheaper up front, but yeah the point stands.

I saw that Nylander/Liljegren for Nelson/Romanov proposal earlier today and literally just said "oh come on man" out loud. It's not even that it's a *terrible* deal - just one that seems to not meet anyone's needs and just moves Nylander for the sake of moving him.

Unless Klinger is lights out this year and finds a way to play defense, I do not want him here for term. The 1 year deal is fine.

Well if he's not, then he won't be back. I don't mind the idea of him getting re-signed but I suspect a 6M+*5 won't go very well. With Gardiner's skill set in the Ozone and Holl's number and tendency for blunders, fans are probably going to go crazy.

I'm curious if Rielly-Klingberg which no one wants to see (out of fear of what would happen in the dzone) could actually turn out to be much better than Rielly-Gardiner pairing.

At this point, I'm not sure what the pairings will look liked. Reilly-Klinger sounds like a defensive nightmare, and McCabe even likes to join the rush so McCabe-Klinger is a little sketchy.

As long as they are aware of what's going on around them it should be fine. I don't think sticking Klingberg with a stay at home guy would work, but I wouldn't be surprised though if the forwards end up having to play D. Back when Werenski and Jones were a pairing, I seem to recall seeing one lead the rush and the other join a few times.
