Why wouldn’t the Sabres just sign Tatar (if they even need a winger) and keep their draft pick?

Why didn't they just sign Tarasenko? The assumption would be that Tatar chose to sign with Ottawa

They have the capspace for added depth. A 3rd is a small price to pay and they can easily recoup it and more at the deadline. Esp if they retain on him. Good investment for a young team with potential to make the playoffs or miss. Either way Kubalik is a good add. Another team could be a better fit
