I can't see Detroit using the remainder of their cap space for Petry. Yzerman already signed Ghost and Holl in UFA. Plus young Edvinsson should be on the team when his shoulder heals up.

I think you have the EK65 retention right.

Dream on dude you aren't getting retained Karlsson for a backup goalie, a B- prospect and a 2025 1st. San Jose can hold on to him if that's the best offer available.

Unfortunately I think that's close to the best the Sharks will get. If SJ ate Petry's (or Granlund's) cap they'd probably get an additional 1st. Maybe that's the better trade since Petry and Granlund have 2 year contracts vs EK's 4 years. The biggest thing the Sharks get out of an EK trade is cap relief. Which will be valuable to them in the last two years of his contract when they may be competitive again and will need cap space to sign their young players coming off entry level contracts and to acquire some FA's to support them. I'm a Sharks fan and I'm after an EK deal before September that provides a 1st and significant cap relief in 2025-26 and 2026-27. I'd like more, but the more I read the less optimistic I get about a huge EK return. Wilson signed a terrible contract with EK that really reduces his trade value. Holding onto EK past September will only reduce the return.

Grier is preparing to hold onto him because the offers are probably no better than this. So be it. Karlsson is worth what the market will bear and it isn't giving much now.

I have no problem with EK65 scoring another 100+ points and winning another Norris trophy.

He probably won't do that again. And even if he did the Sharks still wouldn't make the play offs. In large part because EK's bloated contract doesn't give us enough cap to pay enough other good players. I 'd rather have a 1st and more cap space. Sharks will suck worse without EK next year but that's ok for now. Tank hard for Celebrini! Be competitive again in 3-4 years. Nore competitive than we were with EK. Until then I'll be watching our great prospects at Cuda games.

Grier set the standard with the Burns trade being such a ripoff. I have no problem with Karlsson spending the next four years in San Jose winning the Norris every year on a tanking team. But I suspect Karlsson and Grier find that pointless to their individual objectives.

why?
if he plays at even nearly the same rate and stays healthy then more teams will likely be interested as it would mean last season wasn't a fluke. Also cap is likely to go up more significantly 2024
team situations will change and perhaps that means more interest

That's possible but highly unlikely. Based on the past 3
5 seasons, odds are he gets injured and/or has a mediocre season. That's a big risk to take. Very doubtful he wins the Norris again. Sell high.
Good point on the cap going up. Also one less year on his contract. But he's not getting any younger. And he wants out. Trade him now.
