Description
ome devs fans on capfriendly have been discussing the idea of trading for nylander. i was sceptical as to its viability so i projected the implications of such a trade out on the cap sheet below. the projections are based on this AGM series made by Devsfan25
as this is 'pegged' to the series made by Devsfan25 i port all the additional signings and contracts exactly the way Devsfan25 did in his agms, as well as the guys Devsfan25 suggest the Devils trade or walk away from.
briefly on the trade: nylander is a great player but Devsfan25 suggests the Devils trade way above comparable values for pending UFA 1st line wingers. Holtz + 1st + Palat is more in value than both the Debrincat trades, Fiala trade and Meier trade returned their respective teams
i don't like Devsfan25's idea (though i do not dislike this quite as much as i initially did) and wouldn't want the devils to do this. the cap is mostly fine, even when assuming 2/3 of all ELC performance bonuses hitting each year (which Devsfan25 didn't seem to take into account) it can be done
so the cap is probably gonna be mostly fine (at least short/mid-term). unfortunately devsfan25 suggested Luke Hughes take a bridge deal at 6m. once that is up in 2028 the Devils could be up against the cap depending on how well he and Nemec develops until then
what i really don't like is the devils betting this big on nylander vs. holtz. in 3 years i think the chances of Holtz being an outright better NHLer than Nylander are fairly good (like above 50%)
combined with giving up a potential future ELC in that pick i think the deal is made even worse. it makes the devils capabilities to contend for the cup beyond 27-28 a fair bit worse. i don't think the bet on nylander that Devsfan25 suggest devils should will be worth it in the long-run (and probably not in the medium-run either)

i should say that it makes 0 sense for the leafs to do this also, their window of contention is almost shutting down but moving Nylander out in this trade would kill any hope of this leafs core winning a cup in my opinion

Aging core? Matthew’s, Marner & Nylander are 26-27 🤯. What a completely uniformed take 🤦🏻

If you read carefully you'll note that I said that the Leafs have one more real shot at a cup, the 23-24 season.
Assuming Treliving can keep the guys the band together, ahead of the the 24-25 season Matthews and Marner will be 27, Nylander 28, Rielly 30 and Tavares 34. That's kinda old.
Also, like I said before, Matthews and Marner will have gotten some serious raises by then and Marner due for another the year after further complicates the Leafs ever persistent struggle to find consistent depth scoring throughout their lineup.
And, again, as I said there are no current core players in the prospect pipeline that I can see. I like Knies a lot but he projects more like a complementary guy to the top 6 than anything else to me.

Latest research on the topic of aging in the NHL suggest that players on average peak at ages 23-25, is that informed enough for you?

Window is almost shutting down, 1 year left for a shot at the cup, aging core.

Very interesting takes you have here.

See above, think it speaks to your point (don't mind the snark though it's not meant for you).

You’re right, a 21 year old with 50+ points and great defensively isn’t exciting

The scoring leaderboard would beg to differ 😂. I see a lot of 26-30 year olds, so Leafs core is just hitting their prime. Leafs have lots of space to re-sign Matthews, Nylander & Marner - cap is going up & JT coming off the books when Marner re ups. When you finish top 5 for multiple years in row (& trade picks & prospects at deadline) which Debils are likely to do now for foreseeable future - prospect pool dries up. But Leafs have done better than most other top teams. And their core is far from ageing out - that remains a ridiculous and preposterous statement (someone’s thesis notwithstanding).
But no worries - everyone entitled to their opinion; I’ll wait for your trade proposal dumping Jack Hughes when he turns 26 (washed up 😂).
