Description

Here’s my take as an old guy who is older than Wayne and played against Messier in the AJHL a million years ago!

This is one of those stories where everything you heard is true. Pocklington did care more about his wallet. Bruce McNall was obsessed with getting Wayne to LA. Wayne and Mark were both blind sided. It was a horrible day to be an Oiler fan. The facts are that Wayne wanted to be paid top dollar like he deserved. Free agency with cable tv changed sports. Big markets were going to bring with them the big dollars. So I’m going to remake the deal with Connor, not because it’s realistic but to show young fans what the deal really was using today’s players and dollars.

Note: 15 million from 1988 is about 38,686,686 today.

Marty said he was traded for the cash. Always cracked me up. 😁

I recall those Gretzky Kings jerseys (home and away) selling like hot cakes after that trade. Always liked those jerseys.

Seemed like everyone had one. Even people who didn't watch hockey. There's no Sharks or Ducks (or Kings?) without #99 coming to LA.

I appreciate the insight. As someone younger, this really puts into perspective how insane of a trade that was and how much something like that would shake up the league if something similar were to happen today.

I picked Seattle because your team has the right young pieces to make the trade make a little more sense. LA was a more established franchise by 1988 but hockey was a nothing sport down there and that’s why McCall wanted Wayne so badly.

Another good comparison although I don’t think we can compare Ceci with Marty. Very few players today are anything like Marty.

Wayne was 27 when he was traded, so very close.
