Thinking outside the box

Created by: ColonelX
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 18, 2023
Published: Aug. 18, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. 2025 6th round pick (VAN)
VAN
  1. DeSmith, Casey
Additional Details:
Don't think DeSmith makes it through waivers, we likely took him because it was easier for Pitts to put him in a package instead of finding another trade partner. No retention needed for an upgrade over Spencer.
2.
MTL
  1. Driedger, Chris
  2. 2026 7th round pick (SEA)
Additional Details:
Don't know if he'd waive for Montreal but he's mostly heading to the AHL wherever he plays this year so heading to an team that's right next to a big city behind an Allen that has had some small injuries in the past two years might be a good landing spot for him.
Some low picks traded to even it out because I think that an overpaid 4th liner holds more value than an overpaid AHL goalie plus they get a throw-in prospect for taking on an extra year.
SEA
  1. Armia, Joel
  2. Primeau, Cayden
  3. 2025 4th round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Just like Hoffman for Petry we swap money in and out. I'd prefer to have a veteran goalie in the AHL with Dobes and I think management would like to provide Primeau with another place to spark something, he'll be able to go play in Coachella Valley (Don't think he gets picked up through waivers) and I'm a believer he'll be able to play plenty of NHL games at some point. Pretty sure Kokko plays at least a full year in Liiga before coming over so Primeau would compete with Stezka for games.

I personally would rather have Primeau than Driedger to mentor Dobes
Cayden has always been good for the Rocket, yes he struggles at the NHL level, but he is an important piece for Laval if they wanna make the playoffs
Armia other year hurt his value too much IMO for Seattle to consider

We keep Primeau. Don’t need to trade him to move Armia. I still believe in him, we need to give another season and then we’ll see. Goalies take time to develop

I could definitely see Van doing that trade if they find a way to clear cap first but as it stands they can’t afford desmith

They aren't that far off, counting Mikheyev's cap you're just 271k shy after Martin goes through waivers. With 8 defenders maybe they send one down in the minors and start the season with a 22 man roster and 500k of cap space that's accruing everyday?

I wouldn't mind Primeau but if he's the only player we can give away to completely clear Armia's contract with no retention .... It's a tough spot to be. Dobes would be in good hands with any of the two considering Driedger's journeyman career through the league. The team clearly lost faith in the fact that he's our next goalie in Montreal when they drafted 3 new ones so his value with the team might be to all time low.

Are you accounting for Pearson of LTIR?

Going with LTIR setup on CapFriendly as it is, is he ever coming back? 6 months after his injury he was still far from being recover and that's after 5 surgeries.

Right now primary belief is Pearson will be healthy for start of seaso. Otherwise yeah, they could easily take on desmetib

Reports are that he will be ready, so the Canucks cannot make moves with the assumption he will be on LTIR. That have to assume he will be ready and his cap hit will count

Seattle probably wants Dvorak instead of Armia as the kraken were the 2nd worst face-off team in the NHL last season and Dvorak is far more useful than the ghost of Joel.
