Makes sense for both

Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 18, 2023
Published: Aug. 18, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This trade helps both teams , Brodie and Tanev are same age and both shutdown defense so that is very similar. The retention on both sides helps both teams. Tanev is a bit more physical and right handed so we do not get worse , are under cap , and protect everyone including Jones. This will help CGY even more if they lose Hanifin because now they will still have 2 top RD and LD.

Flames Fans do not want Brodie back thank you. Yes Tanev is a bit injury riddled but is a hell of a lot better player than Brodie. Flames pass quite easily

So it makes sense for you guys to have either 6.25 Weegar or 4m Anderson or 4.5 m Tanev on your 3rd pair?
This helps both teams clear cap space and have cheaper 3rd pairs. Maybe the the pick for retention on Tanev comes from our side because I agree Tanev is a bit better but not a ton like you say. With the retention it gives you Brodie at 2.5M and opens 2 m cap space for you.

Flames are better off keeping Tanev.

Weager and Andersson will most likely be the top pairing. Kylignton will replace Hanifan and play with Tanev.

Then you still have a 3.75 m defense on 3rd pair in Zadorov.

I adjusted the trade a bit so TML pay both retention to a 3rd party team.

So what? We had him there last season.

I think that it's optimistic to believe that a third team will retain $4.75 million ($6 million in actual cash) for a third and a fifth. Retaining quite a bit less than that cost the Kings the equivalent of two seconds.

This is probably the most zero-sum trade I’ve ever seen. Both incredibly similar players. Both play the right side (who cares about lefty-righty), and virtually changes nothing for either team.

How exactly does this make sense for both teams? Calgary doesn't have cap space

Tanev actually played more games than Brodie in each of the last 3 seasons.

I agree that the Flames pass. We can't take on the extra cap.

I personally really like Brodie, and if it was for someone like Z, or after Hanifin is traded for futures I would love to see Brodie back.

In the trade I had to write it because armchair gm doesn't work with 3rd party retention.
The whole point of this is you get Brodie at 2.5 M and we get Tanev at 2.25 to help both teams with cap.

Please read they are both retained 50% which helps both teams as they are over cap. That is the main point plus it helps to have a right hand D , who ever said it makes no difference is wrong.

For how many years were the the other contracts ? Tanev is only 1 season and Brodie 2 seasons left? The amount of seasons being retained is a huge difference.

Both players are retained 50% salary by a 3rd party team , that was the whole point of trade to help both teams with cap on similar players.
The picks in the trade from TML pay for both retention to 3rd party team or teams.

If it's a 1 for 1 then still it doesn't make sense because Tanev is the better D! He has chemistry with anyone he's paired with. He's also especially good playing with younger D. I wouldn't trade him, unless I was sure he was gone at the end of the year, and in that case I would rather get younger assets like Liljegren.

Curious what trade you're talking about.

The deal by which Los Angeles dumped Cal Petersen's $5 million cap hit while retaining $2,025,000 on Ivan Provorov and gave up Sean Walker, Helge Grans and a second-round draft pick. The two AHL stiffs LA acquired aren't the equivalent of either Walker or Grans.

Los Angeles dumped twice as much salary as this guy's suggesting, not significantly less.

Wrong. Just check 30% of Provorov's salary for the two seasons.

10 days later, yep it still doesn't make sense for CGY. Tanev is the better fit.
