Are they screwed

Created by: WN88
Team: 2025-26 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 24, 2023
Published: Aug. 24, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
These are reasonable contract extensions for Draisaitl and Bouchard once their contracts are up. It’ll leave ~12 million to sign the other half of the team, with a realistic salary cap for that season. They also have to save money for Mcdavid’s new contract… the Campbell and Nurse signings look worse and worse.

If the crunch happens in 2025 moving cap out isn't going to be difficult, either through a buyout or trade(s). Besides, the cap is projected to be much higher than $87.5M in two years.

In 2026, when McDavid's contract expires, Edmonton also has Ekholm, Kane and Kulak coming off the books. There will be plenty of money for McDavid.

The cap being higher is pretty irrelevant. The higher the cap, the higher the cap hit Draisaitl and Bouchard will have.

That's not how it works.

If the cap is $5M higher (6%), they won't take all $5M. They maybe get another 6% or so. That leaves cash for other contracts.

Broberg should have a reasonable contract and hopefully he has gained enough experience that he can be a good 2nd pairing dman. If not, filling that 2nd pairing rhd with an upgrade over Ceci's pizza may be hard.

I think theyll continue the status quo. Itll be tight but theyll make it work but making meaningful improvements over the current roster is going to have to come from player development.

Yeah... But the goal is to also built a good team around your stars... Which will be a lot harder when Draisaitl comes off his Puppy contract

Possibly. He doesn't strike as the egotistical type that will want the top contract in the league though.

Yeah... So he'll take the discount from 15 mill to 14 mill... And McDavid will get his 15-17 mill

They want to win and they understand that the more they take, the harder it us to put together a winning roster. I bet they'll both take discounts.

Please, give me the mane of someone who's taken a discount in the NHL? Don't mean this in a mean way but hockey careers are short, so players maximize their value... McDavid and Draisaitl each have egos, it's what got each of them to where they are and beyond... They each want to be the highest paid player

Connor McDavid, Evander Kane and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins certainly did. There's three.

Lol, McDavid took 16.67% of the cap... EK was in a lawsuit agaisnt his wife and certainly took as much as he could... 5 mill was the most he could get though and the Nuge is still an overpay who just happens to play with 2 of the top 5 players in the world

Mcdavid was literally given the max percentage of the cap a single player can take at the time. This is the dumbest take ever.

Well, if that's what you think there's no point in continuing the conversation. Any unbiased person would see the three examples I gave as reasonable and accurate, but clearly you aren't that person.

- McDavid could have got much more, it was widely reported at the time that he was offered $13.25M and talked them down.
- Kane was coming off a successful half season + playoff run where he scored 35 goals and 56 points in 58 games, including 13 goals in 15 playoff games. He could have asked for much more than $5.125M.
- Nugent-Hopkins was coming off a season where he scored 61 points in 65 games, plus 8 more in 4 playoff games. He's one of the most versatile players in the league, he can play all 3 forward positions, he's good offensively and defensively, he can (and does) play PP, PK, 3v3, 4v4, 5v5, 5v6, 6v5 etc.

There are other examples: Crosby, for instance. But you just continue on with your jealousy-fueled biased narratives.

???? How am I biased? 16.67% of the cap was taken... How is that not a payday? 16.67% of the reported cap by the time McDavid gets his extension to kick in is 16 million dollars... With the current cap space, it's 13.75 mill. That's 2.75 mill more than Matthews' current contract in a couple of years or using this year, it's 500k more (despite Matthews' contract kicking in next season) (or roughly 1-2% more in cap space taken up)... 6 years ago too but Matthews' is greedy and yet McDavid's taking a discount. He beat the record at the time (I forgot who bc I'm pretty sure JT had yet to sign, who was prob. the example you should have used considering it was widely reported the Sharks offered 13.5 mill but whatever).

Kane: Where does it say he scored 35 goals bc the nhl.com website begs to differ... Kane had 22 goals, 17 assists for 39 points when he signed his contract despite playing with McDavid... That's like saying Nuge or Hyman have the best contract bc they got over a ppg... It's obvious they are benefiting from playing with better players... And it's not like Kane's great defensively...

Nuge: He's not good at defence, Just bc you play PK, doesn't make you good at defence... JT Miller also plays PK and 5v6... That doesn't make him a stud defensively... As for Nugent-Hopkins, just like above, he played with McDavid and Draisaitl... You put a beer leaguer out there and he's potting at least 20 so how am I being bias when it's obvious Nuge's stats are skewed based on who he plays with?

I'm actually not jealous at all... I like the players the Leafs have (Maybe minus Marner) and they should do better than they did last year... What's there to be jealous about?
