He’ll be 35 in November, which I think makes him eligible for a bonus laden contract. Wouldn’t be surprised if he signs cheap with a bunch of bonuses. Most contenders don’t have much space

No chance PHI takes that.

Why would PHI trade 3 guys under contract, who I presume are playing well beacuse you want them for the playoffs, for 2 UFAs who probably arent part of the rebuild, a Liljegren who in his 6th yr is wanted out of TOR, a solid but bottom 6 34 yr old winger?

Then they have to flip 3 guys TOR cant flip?

If PHI is trading a 28 yr old 1RD (where you put him), a 2RW, a 3C, and an expiring but top of his value 3LD, they'd want picks. While I dont know if Laughton is worth a rumoured quality 1st and 2nd, considering what TOR gave up for an expiring O'Reilly, you'd have to think Laughton is worth 2 2nds and a 4th, Koneckny is worth a 1st and 2nd and a 3rd, a solid Risto worth a 2nd and 4th, and a Seeler a 3rd. So is that package from the leafs in PHILLY eyes worth a 1st, 4 2nds, 2 3rds and a 4th?

Liljegren as an expiring 6th yr pro who has not established himself as a top 4 guy and was a healthy scratch in the playoffs probably worth a 2nd and 4th, Jarnkrot is worth a 3rd, Brodie has value, but not to PHI, maybe they could add him to other TDL moves Staal, Walker but thats alot of dmen to flood the market with and one of the main buyers (Leafs) would not be buying, so to PHI maybe he gets a 2nd and 3rd, but theyre doing alot of work just to claim back what they "paid" to get him.

So that leaves Nylander whos worth a 1st and 2 2nds and a 3rd at the TDL as an expiring UFA, BUT where does PHI get ahead in all this?

And they just dealt 3 guys under contract beyond 23-24 for pretty much equivalent value?

All in all, its just not the pieces PHI would want for things they want to keep or can get more individually.

Philly isn't trading all that without a single pick or a prospect coming back.

They aren't going to bet on these guys having ths same value after switching from one of the best teams to one of the worst.

Also this makes no sense for Philly since they want to be tanking this season.

Yeah probably shouldn't have said deadline, maybe a 3rd team needs to be involved. Just wanted to make it fair from a pure value standpoint, but Philly would be in a great spot to immediately flip Nylander with retention. After that they would have improved their chances of tanking overall, I wouldn't even say this trade alone wouldn't hurt (or help) their chances of tanking either.

I think your trade evaluations are reasonably fair as mine were intended to be as well. I'll say first that this was built around straight up value for both teams. It's not realistic I agree, as there would need to be a 3rd team involved more than likely and it's a lot of moving pieces. By your count though, the value coming from the Leafs to the Flyers would be:

A 1st, four 2nds, three 3rds and a 4th.

And from Carolina to Toronto:

A 1st, four seconds, two 3rds and a 4th

So one way of looking at it is your not only getting full value for your players per your evaluation, but an extra 3rd as well. That may not be an easy thing to do given cap restraints and the hesitation some may have to acquire Risto; so in the hypothetical scenario where this series of trades is able to get you that return then I absolutely think it makes sense for you.

Having those players under contract should not be relevant, and should instead be more of a motivation for the Flyers given the fact it not only clears up cap, but should return what is likely the highest value you'd get for that combination of players. The long term control would be more valuable to the Leafs than the Flyers, which would be reflected in the futures the Flyers would receive. None of the players you're giving up would be a part of a contending flyers team in the future and would only hurt your attempts to tank while their values decline.

Depends on where you see where they are at. Considering that they have almost 10 players in their 3rd year or less, including key players like frost, tippett, york, cates, etc..., and impact youngsters like andrae, foerster, brink, errson in the pros, (along with alot of depth-middle/bottom 6 guys, or 4-7th dmen: desnoyers, attard, helge, ginning, etc...their rebuild has started. And Bonk, Gautheir probably coming next year, not to mention Mitchkov or the 2 1sts/2 2nds they have in 2024 they aren't starting from scratch.

Guys like farabee, hart, koneckny are all 26 yrs old or less, laughton is 29, risto is 28 so thinking that they arent good and reasonable vets to keep for the next 2-3 years (while they're pretty much under contract) during a rebuild is writing them off. The only reason to trade them is for an over offer.

RR is far from a #1 d-man and is a terrible option for the leafs. Koneckny and Laughton would be a very good addition to the lineup. Kane isn't a guy the leafs need but at 800k is a risk the leafs would take.
