23-24 Leafs

Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 26, 2023
Published: Sep. 26, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Not a fan of Ryan Reaves leaving us with little flexibility. I'd send him down, absolutley no one will claim him on waivers because he is on a pretty bad contract.

We need flexibility on defense and Caleb Jones gives us that. He was pretty strong for Chicago last season despite them being pretty bad and I think he will thrive with Carolina. I was extremely disappointed when the Leafs didn't sign him. I don't think a fourth-round pick is enough however I just chucked it in to make something work.

I'm not really a fan of Nylander on the third line because it pushes someone into the top six who probably shouldn't be there. Marner should probably be with Tavares but Knies is most likely the quality winger that Tavares and Nylander have needed for about four seasons.

A Domi, Robertson, Jarnkrok line I like quite a lot. Two players with good shots being paired with someone who is a genuinely good playmaker I feel could be a great third line.

The fourth line will ideally be a defensively solid minutes chewer that just about outscores what it concedes. It mainly includes players who will most likely be on the PK at times.

Not 100% sure about the defensive pairings. The one thing I know is that Gio as much as I live him is not an 82-game player anymore and Klingberg should probably receive sheltered minutes as he is not the player he once was.

Goalies are the goalies, two solid options.

i actually think that a better top six would be:
Knies-Matthews-Nylander
Bertuzzi-Tavares-Marner

that first line would be flashy and fast while that second line is a repeat of the 2018-19 line of Hyman on the LW...except this time Bertuzzi is better

ryan reaves prob wouldnt play a full season so honestly depending on the matchups, u can switch between lafferty and reaves as the last forward

Nope, Reaves is fine where he is at. This isn't a Kyle Dubas team anymore where you think you can win with guys like Denis Malgin

I would send Nick Robertson down and trade Dubas' mistake of a signing in Jarnkrok

Robertson should be sent down. Coming off an injury might need time to get back to game speed/ needs to develop more in AHL. Should not be developed in the NHL.

First line ice-time with the Marlies is definitely what he needs. Keefe gives up on his young guys real quick and doesn't let them make mistakes. Robertson would be watching way to much if he somehow made the leafs. Can't wait till KEEFE gets FIRED.

We have consistently signed gritty-type players. Simmonds, Clifford. Traded for gritty type players, Foligno, Acciari, O'Reilly etc. The issue in the Florida series and in playoff series of years gone by was a largely one-dimensional defense that only had Rielly that could launch attacks through passing AND skating, and the other issue with the players was a straight-up lack of skill and foot speed in the bottom six.

Another issue has consistently been different treatment from refs compared to other teams but everyone conveniently forgets that. Furthermore, taking digs at players like Malgin but wanting players like Reaves who are just of a bigger frame, slower, and occasionally fight someone for no usually little to no reason, is usually thinly veiled Xenophobia against us Europeans. It was true when Cherry said it about Nylander and Ritchie and it's true now.
