Tanev could get us a pretty penny at the TDL.

So would Klingberg and the 1st and Niemela is beyond enough for Tanev. I have no interest in Dube though, the kerfoots of the league aren't what I think this team needs.

With all that said, I am not sure I even want the team to make a move on defence. Not until at least Christmas. Klingberg could really work in the Keefe system and Liljegren is sure looking poised. If he takes a big step this season, that could make the deadline look a lot different.

no matter how well Klingberg performs in the season, I just don't think I could really really trust him in the playoffs. I don't think we have a ton of guys that you know you can definitely trust - at least not as many as we should as a contender - and Tanev would help to slot everyone down to their proper place in that regard. And yes I agree - Liljegren is awesome and I hope/think he'll take strides this year

If Liljegren does take a step, which I think looks likely, what are the chances that Tanev at his age is even as good as last year? I totally would want him still, whichever of Klingberg or Timmins can fill the 3rd RD. I think a pair of Tanev and Brodie could make for a pretty great shutdown pair in the playoffs. McCabe wouldn't have to face tough defensive assignments either and that makes him more effective.

But what if both Klingberg and Timmins just click? Timmins proves to be a good two-way player and Klingberg just turns the clock back in Keefe's possession system.

man idk, Tanev was statistically like the best defensive defender in the NHL last season and is consistently in the conversation year in and year out, that's a massive addition. I think Klingberg's best case scenario is that he turns back the clock offensively and is still in the bottom 20% of defensive ability D in the league. I just don't trust that. Timmins can fill that role for a fraction of the price, and we can go get a real shutdown stalwart. If we get LTIR money and had the ability to do both, great, but I'm prioritizing DFD over OFD 10 times out of 10.

This is another Tyson Barrie situation just waiting to happen.
