Yes. Watching him play, he's just a guy with above average defensive instincts and whole lot of nothing else. Even then, you only notice him when he makes a massive mistake. He's young, but that's his only upside.
He's definitely not an NHL player yet and certainly not a 2nd pairing guy. Plus, he's not attractive as a some other players on waivers that are on 2-ways and making minimum wage.
Like who? Ottawa has arguably waived the 3 most attractive pieces so far... All 3 were 22 years old last season for Christ's sake. Not even sure I even seen this before. Dorion is either terrible at drafting or terrible at evaluating pro talent or terrible at managing assets. Could be a combination or even all 3 lol
This is what I found on JBD yesterday :
From 2020-21 to 2021-22, JBD only played 32 NHL games but among the 22 Sens D-men who played on the team, he ranks 4th best xGA/60 (only Kleven, Heatherington and Reilly were higher, also small sample sizes) and the 2nd best GA/60 (only Larsson had a better one but only 8 games). There's literally 1 more goal allowed per 60 when Hamonic is on the ice (2.13 vs 3.13). And you have to note that JBD was 20 to 22 y/o during that time, not even fully NHL ready
So this is the only stat that matters for JBD, GA and xGA
That doesn't mean that he is great or anything but a boring "safe" kind of guy could be useful to have as a 6th/7th, instead of a continuous adventure like Hamonic or a totally unproven guy like Guenette. Poor Brannstrom that will have to carry Hamonic all year. It's the 3rd pair but he's not as good as Sanderson. It will bring down Brannstrom's game and trade value. So likely another asset pissed away

First round pedigree and having the old right handed shot does get you looked at. I just don't see him being any better than the likes of Connor Timmins or even Ty Smith. Both of which are probably going to clear and be assigned to their respective AHL affiliates.
Don't get me wrong, I have hopes that JBD isn't claimed because there is still some value and upside despite his shortcomings, but it's not like it's going to hurt Ottawa in the long run.
Ty Smith is awful defensively, Thomson is good in comparison. Connor Timmins is quite decent, I'd absolutely have him over Hamonic and Guenette
Of course it's not going to hurt Ottawa in the long run, even Thomson or Sokolov but by aggregation, it already does. We have been in an earth scorched rebuild for 6 years, haven't made the playoffs yet but still PISSED AWAY so many assets, it's insane. You're supposed to do the opposite lol (look at the Coyotes for example)

When you can't make a rebuilding squads bottom pairing, even as a 7, that's shocking.
This doesn't mean anything, this team is managed by Pierre Dorion. A 2.95 AAV quality bottom-6 forward is now seen as a major cap dump. There's no limit to Dorion mismanagement
Thomson/JBD/Sokolov is really not as risky as Gustavsson, but just a year ago he got major egg in his face with that trade. The first it ever happened was the more known Mika Zibanejad.
