Description

Overpay? Definitely. But if Hugo really want Laff then they’ll have to pay for his #1OA pedigree. It’s just the way it is.

I used Dach as a template. He got a 1st(13thOA) and a 3rd(66thOA). He was similar age as Laff is now and went 3rdOA his draft year. He also had a lesser stat line than Laff but is a center so I took that into consideration. MTL 1st will most likely be a top 10 in 2024 but is a gamble for NY so let’s say it’s worth slightly more than the 13th that was traded for Dach and the 3rds are a wash. The pick of defensive prospects is to make up the difference. For Rangers fans who don’t know them Norlinder and Trudeau have looked fantactic in camp, Barron hasn’t looked so great but is a former 1st rounder with offensive upside and Engstrom is one of MTL’s top prospects in Europe.

Top 3 would be enough. What makes the pick enticing and worth more than the 13thOA paid for Dach is the possibility of it turning out to be a high pick.

Rangers don’t really need defensive prospects. Their top 5 is pretty much set for a couple years

I don't think any team would spend a first on Laffy at this point in time. Way too much uncertainty.
