This is around the value I've seen posted btw:

1. Both Dach and Newhook were RFAs when traded, and that's a bigger difference than you know, especially seeing as Laf hasn't played a game on the contract they JUST signed him to.

2. That 2024 first is a very different thing from 13+66ovr or 31+37ovr for Dach and Newhook. It's looking like an east top 5 pick again.

3. The Habs already have a logjam at forward, and are looking to give ice-time to the young guys they have right now. There'd have to be more moves after this one, and it's already late to do that. If this was a possibility, it probably would've been done prior to Laf's extension.

4. Laf has exceeded Dach and Newhook, and if he's traded its probably to help the Rangers NOW.
(Newhook was traded to aquire the assets to get an rfa in Ross Colton. Aren't many rfas around right now)

5. Players who can replace or better Laf's production at around the same cap hit are highly valued. Here's a rough list:

Although I'd like the idea of getting a Lafreniere type player, it's not probable.
