Created by: Maleskualex

Initial Creation Date: Oct. 17, 2023
Published: Oct. 17, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Garland wants out...
Columbus likes Garland...
Columbus might want to move Roslovic by the deadline or else they lose him for free...
Vancouver wants to clear cap space for this year and next...
Roslovic expires this year...

This all makes too much sense, there's gotta be a way this all works

I’m a Garland fan as a M6 guy; It’s just a matter of roster space. Even without Roslovic, we have too many Fs.

It’d have to be something like Roslovic (with retention), Peeke, and Bemstrom for Garland and a pick.

part of the appeal of that trade for me is that Roslovic expires this year. I put Roslovic and Garland on par (they even have similar cap hits) I just think moving cap space out is smartest right now so theres room to play this offseason instead of buying out Garland or retaining.

Neither here nor there without Rathbone now

I know, there is absolutely incentive for VAN here.

But the issue is there isn’t really any for CBJ. Unless they are moving out multiple players, CBJ would still have a logjam of Fs. Garland is a fine M/B6 W, but I wouldn’t say he moves the needle for CBJ to be noticeably more competitive.

With this, VAN gets a replacement, a depth guy with control (who can be non-QO’d if you want to move on after this year), and another RD. Not to mention long term cap flexibility. CBJ get to clear out a backlog of a few players, get a solid M/B6 W with some defense to his game, and get a pick as incentive.

I'd add that Columbus' cap situation next year would make it difficult to take on the entire Granlund cap hit without moving out compensatory cap. That's one of the reasons I really like the idea of sending Peeke and brokering a deal around him, the term is identical and Vancouver gets a positional need and $2.2M in cap relief as a starting point while Columbus gets a better player and clears the RD logjam.

I don't think there's a way to make it work from Columbus' end by taking on Garland's full contract and only sending UFAs, we've only got about $20M next year to sign key pieces due for big raises in Johnson, Marchenko, Texier, Sillinger, and Chinakhov, plus Bean, Blankenburg, Bemstrom, and Foudy expiring. Johnson and Marchenko probably get $4+ each, so that's $12M to either sign or replace 7 players. It's enough if you don't add Garland's whole deal, but if you take the whole contract, suddenly you're looking at ~$7M to sign those 7 and you're losing at least one or two. If Peeke moves out, suddenly that number is ~9.75M. If Vancouver retains even $1M, we're sitting at ~$10.75M and we're probably in the clear. Garland's an improvement on any that would be on the chopping block, but I'd like to avoid a Pinto situation if possible with whoever remains.

TL;DR: I think there's a trade here that makes sense, but not if it's just Columbus sending UFAs for Garland's entire deal.

Agreed.

IMO, KJ and Marchy are the only sure-fire big paydays.Tex, Sillinger, and maybe Chinny could get decent raises if they show out.

The rest of the guys are likely still looking at near league-minimum contracts. Hard to justify Bean making much more (if any) than he is right now. Hell, Bemstrom is probably non-QO’d.
