If the season is a failure, the plan for 2024-25, should be to sell, tank for the year, then retool to compete in the 2025-26 season with free agents and prospect developments. The idea is to get younger in the forward core, the d core for now, is fine. Lee's clause becomes a modified ntc. Lee can help with general net presence on the bruins. But why trade for Brett Harrison? The main reason is he was teamates with Matthew Maggio. While I would love to have Wyatt Johnston instead or Shane Wright, they simply aren't realistic to get with a piece like Lee. The second and third rounders are for the retained salary. Lee is very effective as a center on the powerplay, screening the goalie and tipping in pucks. Nearly all 28 of his goals last season came from that style. Kyle Palmieri is a 2nd line winger and is one of the most underrated. He is almost always on pace for 50 points and on a team like detroit who's second line, isn't the greatest, it could certainly be a boost. At 3 million dollars, 50 point pace, and an underrated playoff performer, you really couldn't go wrong. While yes he is injury prone, this A: gives young guys an opportunity to show off, and B: has yet to impact his playoff performance. Again at 3 million dollars, just for the rest of the season, assuming Detroit makes the playoffs next year, and by the way things are going this year, I don't think this would be a bad move for the Wings. Trotz likes Zeeker, and at 1 million dollars off, the cost of a 4th rounder is nothing. Hurricanes were interested in JGP during the deadline so seeing a trade for a b level prospect and a second rounder for the salary retention isn't unrealistic, and considering what JGP brings to the table I think it is worth it for the Canes. JGP is defensively responsible, wins faceoffs, and gets consistent short handed opportunities with his ability to break away. We use Scott Morrow to bring Carey Terrence, another B-ish level prospect. The reason we do this is because we don't need youth in our D core because the ones we would like to replace have full ntc and our young guys aren't ones we would like to replace. Terrence was teammates with Danny Nelson. This helps with preexisting locker-room chemistry which hopefully translates on ice.
I feel like this is wasting the primes of Sorokin, Pelech, etc. You're asking a lot of those prospect forwards to make up for the impacts you'll lose without Lee, Pageau, and Palmieri.

I totally agree, I just figured I would make this in a "if the isles miss and look not competitive" outlook.

I read the description! I mean that Adam Pelech and Ryan Pulock are already 29, and Sorokin is already 28. Brock Nelson is 32! It seems weird to miss out on the next few years and hope that in 25-26 they're still all gonna be just as good *and* that the team around them is gonna be significantly better. Because the other issue here is this team is not bad enough to tank, so unless they get some ridiculous draft luck or manage to do like the Rangers did and convince a Panarin to come, this seems like wasting the end of some really great players' primes.
If they are not heading for the playoffs (which honestly I think they'll at least be in the hunt but I'll stick with this line of logic) maybe doing one of these deals makes sense and then replacing with a younger piece.

my b, the description comment was meant for the other guy, I hit reply instead of quote.
Islanders should have blown it up last year when they had the chance now they have one of the worst contracts in the league and are stuck in the middle

if horvat preforms like he did in Vancouver it will be more than worth it.

he's never going to preform like that on the island he was on a heater playing with extremely talented players in Hughes Pettersson and Miller, Islanders don't have the players to replicate that.
Bostons 2024 1st is going to back to Boston or to Ottawa. If Detroit trades that pick then Ottawa gets Detroit's 2024 1st. Plus Palmieri will be 33 before the season ends and Detroit's 2024 1st is likely going to be a lottery pick.
Bro that sale job doesn’t change these are bad. No one is trading a top 50 prospect in morrow and a near first for an overrated 3C. Nor is Detroit trading a 1st for old and slow Palmieri.
pretty sure you can only have something like 3 retained salary spots. so not sure how they swing this. I don't see Boston giving up a a couple picks for salary retention on Lee. don't hate the player just don't think it's a fit at the moment.

This. Classifying Morrow as a B level prospect is wild.
