It's almost like giveaways just measure guys who dominate puck possesion

Yeah, mostly a mixture of high-skill guys who have the puck a lot, and defensive players playing tough minutes. Just thought it would be interesting! Also shows guys who stick out by not being either of those things but still giving the puck up... *cough* *cough* Evangelista.

It's also ridiculously early lol obviously

It should be giveaways / time possessing puck.

Or giveaways / on-ice CF

Alone it’s misleading stat…as most of these guys are ones you’d want carrying biscuit.

Thought of doing that too but it's kinda early in the season to do /60 stats without getting really weird results for guys not playing many minutes. I'll do that in another few weeks. Obviously this is mostly meaningless.

It’s certainly an ironic list. Giveaways are bad, but leaders are mostly good players. It’s like opposite of hits. Hits are often good, but leaders in hits are mostly players that do not possess puck often (and aren’t good)

I spent so much time trying to explain this concept to someone a few days ago. Was brutal.

Edit: you'd also want to incorporate passes and location of player and target when making those passes. Would be a fun algorithm to more accurately evaluate this make if you had access to all the tracking data.

CF (shot attempts) would be proxy for possessions…so I think it would get at same principle.

team shot attempts or individual shot attempts? I feel like individual would favour snipers/finishers as opposed to passer/play driver types, who are doing more of the turnover risky work

To reiterate, I'm not making any judgements on this list lol. I just thought it would be fun to put together. I 100% agree with what you're saying.

On-ice shot attempts. Team stat too broad…individual too narrow

Ehh….Evangelista’s on his way to becoming a high-skill guy. I’m not too mad at him giving the puck up yet.
