One trade

Created by: Rajvinder
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 6, 2023
Published: Nov. 6, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
TOR
  1. Bouchard, Evan
  2. Campbell, Jack ($1,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Bouchard for Klingberg is a chance for Edmonton to get essentially the same player with more experience on a 1 year deal. (Likely saves cap for next season).

Campbell for Sammy is a chance to get a #1. Sammy was great his last game, was top 10 in every goalie stat last year and most importantly led the league in high danger sv% which will be be big in Edmonton.

The retention on Campbell is 4 years at $1.5M instead of $1.1M, $2.6M, $2.3M, $1.5M, $1.5M, $1.5M if they buy him out at the end of the year.
EDM
  1. Klingberg, John
  2. Samsonov, Ilya
Additional Details:
For Toronto they are buying into the idea that Bouchard can be coached on the defensive side while Klingberg can't.

Also hoping that at $3.5M Soupy can be a solid 1B. No matter how this year goes they can just sign Woll to a contract that is $2.5-4M for 3 years and it will still be less than $7.5M on goalies.

Don't like it for either team but interesting idea. You have a major problem though with Bouchard being traded for two ufas. Dumping Campbell wouldn't be worth that. The Oilers believe Bouchard can be a top pairing D, there's just no way they touch this.

Why would Edmonton give up a young stud dman for the single worst dman in his own zone in the NHL and a goalie with a .871 SV% while not even fully getting out of Campbell’s contract?

Not sure "Young stud dman" is how most people especially Oilers fans and definitely their press would describe Bouchard. "the single worse dman in his own zone" is more like what they say.

100% depends on Holland. He does have a rep for giving up on young guys quickly. We are at 3 games where a Bouchard turnover led to the GWG. What will his position be when that hits 5 or 7.

Retention on Campbell is a no go.
Trading bouch is a no go.
Without even looking at the return it’s not happening.

Didn't even notice the retention on Campbell. There's just absolutely no way. If things start to go well for either Skinner or Samsonov, the wouldn't even have the money to give them a raise. Likewise, for Klingberg.

Really doesn't make any sense to go for the older, more expensive, worse defensively player with less term who is also a turnover machine. Bouchard has 8 takeaways and 9 turnovers, while Klingberg has 5 takeaways and 8 turnovers. Holland has been pretty patient with Puljujarvi, Yamamoto, Holloway, and Broberg and unlike the first two who have been give up on, Bouchard has carved out a role for himself. So, if he does give up on him it's definitely not to bring in Klingberg.

Campbell isn't moving without retention unless it's with multiple firsts.

For comparison one year at $6M cost Toronto a 1st for Marleau. 4 years at $5M it's at least two 1sts.

It’s been how many years and people still use that comparable even tho it holds no weight.
Marleau would only waive his no trade clause if a team would buy him out so he can sign with sharks. How is that similar? Does anyone think that move was smart? Pay first round pick just to over pay Marner that’s dated well…. Just because Toronto did something stupid doesn’t make it a sensible comparable.

Young stud dman is exactly what Bouchard is. He’s not close to being as bad defensively as guys like Klingberg, Karlsson, Barrie, and Rielly. Last season the Athletic had Bouchard 56th percentile defensively, JFresh had him slightly below the 50th percentile (can’t see the exact percentile on the card for just last season), and Evolving Hockey had him at 4.2 DEF rating and 3.9 xDEF rating (in comparison Klingberg had -13 DEF and -9.4 xDEF, Karlsson had -5.5 DEF and -4.9 xDEF, Rielly had -2.8 DEF and -2.2 xDEF, and Barrie had -6.2 DEF and -4.4 xDEF)

He’s also a very good offensive dman (boosted by the powerplay yes but still very good offensively)

He’s worth much more than this package that has essentially 0 value going to Edmonton with how Samsonov is currently playing

Considering the 32 thoughts podcast said that he is more likely to go to the minors than to be traded given the cost other teams have for taking his contract I think it says the price is high. Thats $3.8M in dead money.

Sean Monahan was also a 1st for $6.5M last season. So the comparable works. It's always been the price.

In a week where Kypreos said Bouchard should be sent to the minors, Bieksa said he doesn't think he belongs in the NHL and he has multiple game costing turnovers with rumours that Holland is considering waiving Campbell and wants to shakeup the D, its not absurd to think the old time hockey guy who has historically been very quick to move on from young D especially offensive minded D will consider moving Bouchard.

I also think you underestimate the value of Klingberg. He didn't sign 1hr into FA. He signed on day 2 that means if the Leafs paid $4.1M someone was offering $4M. Not like he had a $700k offer and they just 6xed it. So other teams value him, Barrie had a horrible year in Toronto and Ken Holland signed him for $3.75M the next summer. So it's not like there isn't precedence here. Mike Green is another example of Hollands fixation with older OFD.
