Why would a rebuilding team trade a bad contract for one of the worst contracts in the entire league and waste a buyout spot on it without getting any assets back?

I was gonna add from SJ but saw Vlasic's buyout was pretty cheap (under 2 mil) for all but 2 years (24-25 and 25-26) so figured Habs would need to add to offset that lol

Edit *** Also these move allows for Montreal to move Price and Dach off LTIR and accure cap space

I'd much rather Vlasics contract than Anderson. also buyout spot? are you thinking of retention slots? I don't believe there's a limit on how many players can be bought out

I think he was thinking retention slots or thought there was a limit, which is a common misconception

Would you do the Anderson + Heineman for Vlasic though?

Anderson is cheaper and is at least an NHL player while at this point vlasic is not

Agreed, was just looking at the buyout perspective and the fact that the Habs have too many wingers right now

Just quoting this to make a correction

The buyout on ACGM's doesn't account for the age factor so I was wrong about his buyout price. Since he is over 37 the buyout is only 4 years in length and 3.8 mil in 24-25, 4.8 mil in 25-26, 1.3 mil the final 2 seasons. Basically not actually worth it for Montreal to make this deal and I am removing that portion of the thread as a result

No, I'm just saying it's not like you can do a bunch of buyouts, it makes no sense to acquire a player just to buy him out if you're not gonna get assets for it. When you're buying someone out, it should be because of a contract you just can't get out of but need to, or for a player you received assets as a sweetener to acquire.

I see, my bad, I assumed the asset we were getting in this scenario was less cap hit in 6 of the 8 year buyout but after checking the buyout calculator I saw that Vlasic's buyout is actually more expensive than Anderson's since he is 37 and the buyout is over 4 years not 8 and buying out Anderson actually costs less. For these reasons I removed the trade
