Devils vs Rangers

Created by: dgibb10
Team: 2023-24 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 28, 2023
Published: Nov. 28, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Going player by player who would you rather have.

I have the higher player as better, going line by line using the rangers lines from daily faceoff with slight alterations for Chityl return, and what I expect/want the devils lines to look like

In my personal opinion a healthy devils roster is better top to bottom.

There is however the massive gap in goaltending (I think right now it's about 20 some goal difference in GSAx)

I don't expect 40 year old quick to be any good down the stretch despite his miraculous start, and would probably rather Schmid. But Igor is always an X factor, same with Fox

Ones I debated:
Trouba vs Marino
Quick vs Schmid
Miller vs Schneider

I think it’s simple, both teams are great. Your forward group is better, but our d corp and goaltending are better. Doesn’t mean the devils d corp can’t gain on them tho. Goaltending is where we can really only beat you imo. Devils scare me

One thing about Quick, he is being coached by Alleire. He’s a master with goalies so this may not be an aberration. He’s been phenomenal, maybe even better then Shesty so far

Rangers definitely need more speed vs NJ over anything else imo. Matching their speed is not an easy task

I think our dcores are honestly eerily similar.

Fox-Lindgren and Siegs-Hamilton are similar pairings. LIndgren and Siegs are the same style of dman, but I believe Siegs is a step above. Obviously fox is a top 3 dman in hockey, but Hamilton at least matches offensively. Overall the rangers pair is better

Hughes-Miller and Gus-Schneider feel like similar pairings with youngster-vet, but Hughes is the offensive minded one for the devils while gus is for the rangers. I'd take the devils 3rd pairing tho as I expect Gus to come down to earth a bit and hughes to only get better and better

on the 2nd pairing I'd take Marino over trouba, just much better defensively and takes on much tougher assignments. MIller is definitely better than Bahl tho, who I don't think is ready to take over the graves role yet. I'd say this is pretty even tbh, but if the devils move for hanifin like I want them too it's them by a large margin

Yeah like you said the goaltending is the massive gap

I was hoping for average goaltending from vanacek, and quality backup play from Schmid. Schmid has been underwhelming, but good in his last 6 outings.

Vanacek has been horrific. Last year he'd never make the real tough saves, but wouldn't let in bad ones. This year he's still not making those big saves but letting in a bunch of ugly ones as well

Quick has been ridiculous but I just refuse to believe that a 40 year old goalie can sustain elite level play after being horrific for most of the last 5 years, at least for my own sanity

More or less meant the Rangers d corp is a bit more seasoned. Nemec and a few more years with Hughes they may be better than theirs.

Hughes / Kakko is ultimately what kills us up front, that’s such a massive gap that one lotto ball cost us.

We rose quickly in 22, sophomore stumble 23, strong steady system out of the gate 24. Debbies are 1 year behind, 23 rise, 24 stumble. The future has the answer.

The rangers formula has been the same all 3 years

Average team, carried by goaltending and the power play. Very similar results all 3 years.

Sure we retooled, kept our core and jump right back in the picture. Takes a few years for cup teams, with stumbles on the way. Our start has shown how in sync this team is, plus Lavi's aggressive system. We had enough soft players and brought in some meat, which is a better formula than being soft. We're always in the thick of it and only need the Igor Fox & health stars to align.

You seem to think the rangers have discovered some magic recipe that they didn’t have before. They aren’t any better at generating chances, they aren’t any better at preventing chances against. They’ve just gotten ridiculous goaltending from backups.

So you weren’t reading?

the rangers are a good team. Average roster carried by the best goalie in hockey. Shesterkin is sustainable.

40 year old quick isn’t.

Nearly a GSAx per game isn’t. Even shesterkin, elite as he is, only got about half that in his best year

But you’re going to be shocked when the Wild start to win more, the oilers start to win again (which they already have), the hurricanes already caught back up, after you guessed it, unsustainable metrics to start the season

We’ve already seen it start with a bunch of teams this year who’s PDOs came back to earth, while all the fans claimed they wouldn’t and everyone else knew they would

Hanifin no thanks Carrier literally has 2 less pts and IS BETTER defensively so if it offense you looking for i rather take the cheaper player in Carrier who is also is BETTER defensively. MEHanifin isnt good.

I have seen dozens of games at both...MSG is highly overrated.
Sure, it has some history, but it is kind of a dump.
The Rock is newer, cleaner, has better sight lines, more parking, more amenities.

Nobody cares about parking at MSG when North Americas most active train station sits directly beneath it. Not to mention several subway lines within a 3 block radius. Plenty of people walk to the game as well. MSG doesn't just have "some history." It's called the worlds most famous arena for a reason and all the greats have played there. Every musical icon has had concerts there. Same can't be said for that dump in New Jersey. And no clue what you mean by amenities, you hopping in the spa during intermission? Sight lines are irrelevant if your seats are even halfway decent. Not to mention the area around the rock is a total dump and not a place you'd want to hang out late at night after a game. Literally the only people in the world who would say they prefer the Rock to MSG are Devils fans.

MSG is better because.... a marketing line??

"Most Famous Arena" was used by boxing promoters on different Manhattan area, from which the current MSG (the 4th) took its name.

I have seen every square inch of MSG, been in the catwalks, through the suites (the ones at top and new ones), down through the labyrinth of tunnels below. I have smelled the foul, musty dank from areas where the air handlers cannot reach. I have seen the rats. I have seen the 'black rooms' that are painted black to cover up mold (and the dead-end hallways where they had to wall-off the mold). I have seen their food storage. When I go to MSG, I do not eat.

I don't give two s**ts that Billy Joel plays there 50x a year. Its still gross.
