Blues fans thoughts on the season

Description
Overall what are the Blues fans thoughts on the season? To me this is one of the most inconsistent teams I have ever watched. One game our greatest strength is defense, the next it is our greatest weakness. Same goes for offense. At the end of the day it just leads to a long year of being mediocre. We're too good to truly rebuild and not good enough to contend. It's not an ideal spot to be for a retooling team but also Blues management won't allow for a full rebuild.

As a fan I feel like it's almost easier to support a bad team than this team. At least a bad team you are excited to see prospects play and you know what to expect. With this team, one game you get excited, and then the next game they play like they did against Minnesota which was just embarrassing to watch.

This leads to the trade deadline. I think Vrana is as good as gone he has all the talent in the world but one doesn't fit Berubes scheme and two doesn't try to fit the scheme. I think Scandella will be flipped to some contending team 50% retained for very little. Same with Bortz. My biggest wonder is what happens with Kapanen. The team seems to like him and he fits the style of play they want. I just feel like is he really good enough to block a prospect coming up like snuggerud? I think Sunny will sign long term it would just be rude to get rid of him at this point and he's been exactly as expected this year.

I would love to see Leddy, Krug, Saad, and Hayes all moved but it is almost impossible with their contracts and given Army's history it is also unlikely he tries to move them (outside of Krug but his NTC will ruin any trade idea).

It's great to see Neighbours emerging as a real top 6 player hopefully the Blues just keep him there. I'd also love to see Perunovich play with Parayko instead of Leddy and Parayko but the Blues seem content on wasting Perunovich and his talent.

Another big talk around the trade deadline will be Buch. He is on a cheap deal and one of the best wingers that could be on the market. If it was me, I would honestly trade him. His next contract doesn't fit our window to win and if I could get a ton of assets for him I would do it while his value is so high.

Lastly, at the deadline I would love for the Blues to target at least one young player who is struggling and needs a change of scenery. Players that come to mind are Holloway, Broberg, Kakko, Krebs, Wahlstrom, etc...
Here I have the Blues trading for Holloway but it could be anyone really. Just an example of what I would like to see.

I’m kind of enjoying this season haha. Thomas looks like he is back to being a top-15 C, Kyrou has awesome underlying numbers (he won’t shoot 5% forever,) Buchnevich is still Buchnevich, Neighbours is starting to breakout, Perunovich has looked like a stud. Everyone who you would want to play well is playing well. Sure the team is deeply flawed, but they’re interesting enough to make me excited for every time they take the ice.

You can never again claim any objectivity in your opinions 🤣

Perunovich has looked like a stud?? How? He has some hockey IQ but he’s 3 feet tall. He will be lucky to have a career as a #5 or #6 D.

Literally watch his games and look at his number

Ik he hasn’t been the best but Krug has had a long and good career and he’s short too
Johnny hockey? Yea they tend to not last long but it’s not like it’s unheard of.
He’s been good this year

Calm down there...Perunovich has looked like a stud this year. Been pretty clear to anyone watching. Quinn Hughes is tiny and yet he's been arguably the best dman this year soooo I think you don't really have a point there.

Wow you guys need trophies with Homer awards.

Perunovich has 2 assists in 11 games. He’s completely sheltered with the minutes he does play.

Comparing him to Johnny Hockey is absurd but not surprising lol

I’ve been trying to find this optimism but man they are so hard to watch most nights and you just know they’re gonna finish like 1 pt out of the playoffs and draft someone “safe” 16th overall and do it all over again. Thomas has been getting better and better as the season is going so that’s nice. And I do think kyrou will pick it up. But this should be the rock bottom season imo. Trade the UFAs, trade buch a la matt duchene in Colorado. Bottom out and get a top5 pick, free up some money in the off-season, clean up the defense.

This is nonsense. Parayko has been the best D by a large margin.

I think he’s been fine, leddy has been especially terrible so that hurts his numbers. I think Krug has been our best D remarkably.

I mean Krug has always been good aside from the past couple years, so him returning to form isn’t crazy imo just unexpected

I think the most surprising thing for me this season is how lucky we have gotten in terms of injuries, especially given this year. The only mentionable injury this year has been Buch, which really wasn't that bad. I do think Buch returned before he was 100% which is probably observable by his slightly late start.

I noticed the same thing and the more I thought about it I think the more it makes sense. Blues players aren't putting themselves in positions to get injured i.e. shot blocking, fighting in the corners, etc... as much as they have in the past. I think this in part has led to some of the major inconsistencies on the team especially in games where it looks like the team could care less if they win or lose.

If we go down the route of trading Buchnevich, we should get back a really solid prospect and draft pick. I think Washington might be a decent fit for Ovi. If Blues do half retention on Buch they can get a serious prospect, 1st round pick and probably a 2nd. If we trade Buchnevich, I think we keep Kapanen to plug into a middle six role. He can extend for a 1-2 year deal at a fairly reasonable price. Buch being gone gives the flexibility to bring up 2 of the 3 top forward prospects in Dvorsky, Snuggerud, or Bolduc.

As for defense, we need to trade Leddy… hes bad. Do half retention there and sign perunovich for cheap. I’d then either sign a LD and a RD or run with Tucker and sign a RD. Gotta draft a defenseman and this upcoming draft seems loaded defensively.

Projected Lines for 2024-25
Neighbours - Thomas - Kyrou
Hayes - Schenn - Snuggerud
Saad - Dvorsky - Kapanen
Toropchenko - Alexandrov - Sundqvist
Perunovich - Parayko
Krug - Faulk
Tucker - FA (thinking Roy)
Binnington - Hofer
