Sorokin has an 8.25 mill contract till he’s 37 coming. If the isles decide that the current core can’t win a cup this is their best chance to sell while he still has a year at 4 and no trade protection.

2 years from now trying to sell Sorokins age 31-37 years at 8+ million with a full NMC won’t return a haul

Whether they can get a haul or not a few years from now is irrelevant. There's zero chance the Isles trade him any time in the near future for anything other than a generational-type superstar, if they'd even trade him at all.

A 30 year old goalie is risky and has limited trade value.

If you believe the team around Sorokin right now is enough to make a cup run, keep him for the next few years trying to compete and then be stuck in the muck for 5 years after if it doesn’t. It’s what Lou did with Schneider in NJD too.

If not you trade him and acknowledge what he is, which is a guy who signed a UFA market value deal with significant risk attached due to the term.

Theres a reason he got less money than Bo Horvat in free agency. Goalie value isn’t that high around the league

As far as age concerns, goalies tend to age better than skaters so he should be fine for the next five or six years at least.

Goalies aging well is a myth. Very few goalies have performed well from ages 33 up. In fact over the last 5 years just 4 goalies have been quality starters from age 33-37. Miller, Thomas, Nabokov, and Lundkvist.

Lundkvist is really the only one who played at an elite level through his 30s, and even that was a significant drop off from what he was in his late 20s
