"let New York out of their Barzal contract" LOL. 26 year-old point per game guys are growing on trees these days?

Realistic retool
If they can't do better than that for Brock, just keep him.
Unless we move one of Pulock (NTC) or Mayfield (LOL), there's no room for another RD (because Dobson isn't going anywhere, either), so if they trade Pelech, which I'd be OK with, it needs to be for an LD or a forward.
Lee has an NTC and the chances of him waiving it to go to a bottom feeder like Montreal are probably pretty low.
The Pageau trade is fine I guess.
Duclair is going to get more money and term. DeMelo is redundant with what we already have at RD (especially since you traded for another one). Domi stinks. Reilly is fine for an LD3.
I will eat a bug if the Isles have four rookies in the opening night lineup next season.

Flames Offseason
The Isles already have Pulock and Mayfield signed long-term and Dobson is due for a long-term extension at RD. Unless they move one of those guys (and realistically, Pulock is the only one who's movable, and he's probably not going anywhere with a full NTC) there is no room for Andersson.

I like that this is titled "Slight Changes" and includes three significant FA signings and five significant trades. I wonder what OP would consider "major" changes? Trade away everyone and start over from scratch?

Rebuild Summer Last one
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WhoCares_ItsAFantasyGame</b></div><div>I find it hard to believe that I'm reading comments about having no room for another young RD because they have three players now. Mayfield isn't getting any younger and may need time to rest, Barron is an opportunity for Roy to mold a new kid as he reaches full potential in 1 to 2 years. If Mayfield isn't 100% at the start of next year, Isles may need to have a bit more depth with a player who can play 10min per game on the third pair with offensive potential. His defensive skills can be brought up with good coaching, which you guys have right now in Roy.
Giving a mid to late 1st is not that big of a deal when you have a ready to play guy vs a prospect you have no clue how he can develop in a year or two.</div></div>
The problem is that Mayfield and Pulock are signed long term and Dobson is awesome and going to be signed long term. So that's three RD's locked up for the foreseeable future. The only one of them that should be replaced is Mayfield, but he's unmoveable, so, like you've been told, the Isles don't really have room for another RD, and certainly are going to spend significant assets on one, young or otherwise. Unless they can somehow get someone to take Mayfield off their hands, which there is a roughly zero percent chance of happening since he was both bad and injured this year, and still has six more years under contract.

Unless the Isles can find a way to unload Mayfield's contract, they have no room for another RD behind him, Pulock, and Dobson.

I doubt it. I'd bet there's some real buyer's remorse on that contract. If somebody offered them a young, good player on a reasonable contract plus a couple of draft picks, they'd be stupid to not take it and free up all that cap space.

$7MM for a guy that has 27 goals combined in the two seasons since he signed that contract? And we'd be getting his age 31 through 37 seasons? And the contract is all bonus money so he can't be bought out? I wouldn't trade for him at 50% retained without <em>at least</em> an unprotected first-rounder coming with him.

Could add a pick coming back as well. I just don’t see a future for Hayton on this team.
I originally signed both Skjei and Montour but didn’t find that realistic. So I went for a trade. With Dobson needing a contract after next season I thought maybe that could make NYI entertain offers on Pulock.</div></div>
Even if the Isles were to entertain offers on Pulock (unlikely - if they move a defenseman Pelech is probably more likely to go), the would need a better package than that, starting with a young player that can step in the lineup ASAP.

Who wants Markstrom
That's an awfully generous package from the Isles for a guy making $5.8MM with only 14 goals. If you retain 50% maybe you can get a 3rd for him; you're certainly not getting a 2nd plus a couple of prospects for him at his full cap hit.

Colorado incoming cap crunch
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>littlejerryseinfeld</b></div><div>Filing for arbitration does not keep him from making more money or becoming a ufa</div></div>
It kinda does, because they can only use other RFA contracts for similar players (position, age, career games, and average ice time) as comparables in the arbitration hearing, and it's going to be harder for Mitelstadt to find comparables in his favor than it will be for the team to find comparables in theirs. He should by all means use an arbitration filing as leverage against the team, but I'd be surprised if they went to a hearing and didn't just settle beforehand for something close to what OP has proposed.

You don't think a low ball offer sours the relationship?</div></div>
RFA centers who sign for that much generally did so in exchange for buying out UFA years (e.g., Dylan Strome 5x$5MM, but will hit UFA for the first time at 32 years old). A two-year deal for Mittelstadt buys out zero UFA years and lets him hit UFA as a 27-year-old where he can really cash in (assuming he continues to improve). That being the case, to maximize his career earnings, keeping his next contract to only two years could very well be worth more to the player than maximizing the AAV for the next two seasons.

If they're offering two years though? Regardless of how he gets a two-year deal, it walks him to UFA. That being the case, it may not be worth going through arbitration and potentially souring the relationship with the team (who would be able to offer him an 8-year extension next July) over a few hundred thousand dollars.

Maybe a little bit, but if they're going to give him a contract that takes him straight to UFA I bet the AAV winds up under $5MM, so you're probably not off by more than half a million or so (which, granted, is still problematic in this scenario). However, you're accounting for Landeskog's full cap hit, and despite reports that he may play, I'll be shocked to ever see him on the ice again. A cartilage transplant sounds like a last-ditch effort to avoid a knee replacement.

I could see him taking a AAV in that range in exchange for a two-year deal that walks him to UFA. Anything longer than two years, he's getting substantially more than that though.
