the solution to having a goalie who is playing bad usually isnt to bring in another bad goalie

Vladar has played very well his last few games. He started out the season rough but is definitely on the upswing. Samsonov's mental is shot. At least with Vladar you are getting a similar caliber goalie who isn't doubting himself every time he steps on the ice. You are also adding a big difference maker in Tanev here and saving cap

Martin Jones has played well his last few games too, but you dont spend assets to get a guy like that. Vladar hasnt been good ever for any significant stretch of time and would be worth a flyer on if he didnt make way too much money for what he's done, you dont replace a bad goalie with a bad goalie and think its gonna be better. If you're spending assets you try and actually improve the position, and a 26 year old rocking a sub 900 for the 3rd of his 4 nhl years doesnt do that
As far as tanev being a difference maker, I mean i think he's a decent player but hes old, oft injured and not half the player he used to be. Calling him a difference maker is a stretch.

Calgary declines. We don't want Robertson or Samsonov and the 5ths don't add much value. Take Robertson, Samsonov, the Toronto 5ths and Calgary 4th out and that might get you Tanev but if you want Vladar too you'll have to add at least a 3rd for him.

Vladar was actually very solid last year from like November to February when Markstrom was struggling. Its hard to say "any stretch of time" too when he only plays like 2-3 times a month.

Call it whatever you want but Toronto is in a goalie crisis and your GM already knows and likes Vladar a lot. You may not but there is a decent chance he ends up a Leaf.

Tanev isn't who he used to be? He's literally been the best shutdown defenseman in the league over the last 3 years with the sole exception of Jalen Chatfield who plays against far inferior opponents. His game hasn't fallen off this year, Calgary as a team simply has not offense when Zary isn't going n the ice so they are always playing on their heals.
