Taking a Risk

Created by: Shakabakes
Team: 2023-24 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 31, 2023
Published: Dec. 31, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I could see this highly debated.

Higher upside with Chytil, but with the injury history.

More reliability with Sissons, but Chytil could regain his form and take off.

Chytil locked up longer, but more Cap room with Sissons.

Just based on where these teams are this year, it's logical for the Rangers to beef up the squad for this Season, while Nashville gets younger for the future.

Could go either way with this. If anything, just trying something new.

As a NSH fan, I'd even add a 3rd to that deal for Chytil. Maybe others disagree as SIssons is arguably one of the best defensive forwards in the league.

I didn't go too crazy at first, considering I figured people from either side would have strong opinions. That's why I posted it as 1 for 1.

But in the back of mind, I thought about throwing in a Pick for either side. Which makes me think something like this could be possible.

Chytil is the Wild Card here. His potential is greater, but his injury history could be more detrimental. Both sides are taking a risk that might only pay off for one of them.

I'd hate to see Chytil go, personally. Really broke out nicely last Season. But the way this current Contender is built with the 1-2 Punch of Zibenejad and Trocheck up top, Sissons just makes too much sense. Rounds out the 3rd Line beautifully on Offense and Defense (as you noted). Not a rental. Cap savings. To the point where even if Chytil regains his form, the Rangers still walk away with a solid asset.

The thing about trading Chytil is that it cuts the Youth Core into nothing, and sends us right back into rebuild mode in 5 years. If the Rangers trade a winger like Kakko, it's not the end of the world because we have people in the cupboard to replace him like Perrault, Othmann, Sykora. But the Rangers don't really have a high-end centre prospect to replace Chytil. Unless they were to draft one this year of course.

Nashville GM isn't taking the risk on Chytil until he comes back from his latest concussion and shows he is healthy. At this point, if the Nashville GTM was willing to take the risk, the Rangers should do it.

Excellent point, but it depends on whether you think he'll be available at all.

If Chytil were healthy, it would make all the sense in the world not to trade him. He would not only be performing as expected, but you would be more reliant on him since you have no one to replace him.

But on the other hand, if the Rangers FO is of the belief that these concussion issues could ultimately compromise him further, then it makes no difference. Yeah, you're still in a hard spot with no one to replace him. But if he's not going to be out there at all, you're forced to throw something out there anyway.

And at the very least, Sissons gives you a stopgap while you search for more options.
