Sharks 2024-25 Missing Pieces

Created by: pavelski_tip_in
Team: 2023-24 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 2, 2024
Published: Jan. 3, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming the Sharks retain their RFAs and don't resign any of the UFAs, here are the holes on the roster heading into next season:

(1) 3 top 6 wingers including 2 top line talents
(2) 1 3rd line winger (Duclair would work here)
(3) 2 1st pair defensemen
(4) 1 top 4 defenseman
(5) 1 starting goaltender

This assumes the prospects remain around the same level. The Sharks also have 6-7 defensemen with bottom pair talent level.

What AHL players, UFAs, or draft picks can the Sharks target to fill out their roster?

I would also say that Hertl is a 2nd line centre. a VERY good 2nd line centre. But he is not a clear number one.

So I would say they are missing a full top line and a full top D pair and a #1 goalie.

Because they have Hertl they could get away with another really strong #2 guy.

Either way this team is still 3-4 years away. They have started collecting some pretty nice assets. I hope they can get Celebrini at the draft. That will help them a ton!

I think with some good wingers you could have hertl as a 1C, the sharks just obviously don’t really have that either.

I’ve always been high on eklund but he hasn’t really taken the next step yet. Which ig makes sense without a puck moving dman another winger to play with and more

Eklund has been surprisingly competent defensively and has been creating lots of opportunities for his linemates with his behind-the-net passing (most of which haven't been converted). He has also shown some flashes on the powerplay with his passing and shooting.

Yet, he still hasn't been able to drive offense at 5v5 even when playing with Hertl. He needs to contribute more to solidify himself in the top 6. Like you said, with so many pieces missing around him, it's hard to know how much is his fault.
