Changing the focus

Created by: PenGoater99
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 22, 2023
Published: Jan. 7, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Penguins now need another defenseman more than anything else. This is mainly due to Graves being a complete disaster with no redeeming qualities to speak of. The market for defensemen will be very thin so it might be difficult for the Pens to pull off a trade that noticeably improves the team, but if they actually want to make a run, it'll have to be done.
Trades
1.
PIT
  1. Timmins, Conor
Additional Details:
Dubas is familiar with him, doesn't carry a large cap hit, and seems to have fallen out of favour with the Leafs (someone confirm this).
TOR
  1. Ludvig, John
  2. 2025 4th round pick (PIT)
2.
PIT
  1. 2024 5th round pick (COL)
  2. 2025 4th round pick (NJD)

Hanifin to Penguins kinda makes sense.
I don’t if Dubas is willing to do this trade 🤔

Kind of weird specifying a left handed defenseman then trading for a righty. When we are talking about low value guys like this, I've got to assume they can find someone who shoots left.

Kinda changed the meat of the post, but your point still stands.

There's nobody available that is cheap in terms of acquisition cost and carries a small enough cap hit to work for the Pens. It's going to require an unorthodox solution.

Again, I find that hard to believe. Guys like Travis Dermott in Arizona, Victor Mete is an option who's not playing in Philly, Calle Rosen in St Louis, etc. Hell, you ar even trading away one in the same boat in POJ.

The Pens need a guy that can at the very least tread water in top 4 minutes. POJ has shown he can't do that and I'm not confident that guys like Mete, Dermott, and Rosen can do that either. Given where this team is, they can't afford to go through a trial and error process to see who fits.

I mean when you are paying a 4th round pick and a waiver claim, you are going through a trial and error process regardless for someone who can tread water in top 4 minutes. It's the only way that value would make sense for any partner. To put it into perspective, you are saying that Timmins is a defenseman who can tread water in top 4 minutes, signed to 1.1 mil aav with an extra years term and expires an RFA ... but is only worth a 4th and a waiver claim. There's no way to reconcile those 2 things.

I think I'd rather just play POJ instead of getting a guy who isn't really any better to play on his off side
