If I Were Doing This

Description
Just an early -- some would say premature -- look at next year if the reports on Nylander's new deal are close to accurate.

It looks to me like Max Domi is almost a required re-signing. Bertuzzi, not.

To beef up the defense I chose two of the 6 free-agent defensemen under 30 when the season starts who are currently averaging at least 20 minutes' time on ice. Obviously, trades this season could completely derange this strategy. But I think that the Maple Leafs would be much better off spending the money on Forsling than Bertuzzi.

LW looks soft. (Maybe Kampf gets traded and the money used there.) Defense, as noted above, is dependent on the free-agent market. And maybe some of the remaining cap space needs to be devoted to a more experienced back-up goalie than Dennis Hildeby, whom I believe shouldn't be thrown to the wolves this soon.

Of course, burying Reaves in the AHL would give Toronto an extra million in cap space.

Dumba shouldn't be getting that much money. And Roy would be my target

Robertson has not shown enough (for me) to even make the lineup, never mind play plumb role beside JT & Willy. If I were Tre, I’d try to extend Bert ASAP, Domi too but lesser priority. Gotta think one of Cowan or Minten make the team next year but they just take Holmberg or Steeves. I would target someone to play with Reilly & someone like Seeler or Chatfield - lower cap hit. But sensible proposals 👍

Hello ol' pal. You're right about Domi, he seems to be doing well at 3C now. Bertuzzi has picked up his game but may be a necessary "non signing" due to cap.
Don't know if Dumba is worth that much now, I wonder if maybe a Walker/Seeler (two Ontario boys) signing would be be better signing. at total of maybe 7m, instead of the 10m for Dumba/Forsling.
I've been pleasantly surprised by Benoit. Don't know if he a guy you want to be in the top six all year., but certainly worth a signing.

Funny after the California swing, the Leafs look like they should be contenders for the Vezina

And a Happy New Year and may it be a healthy one for you, my old pal.

I saw another Toronto ACGM where those two Phillies (play on words) were acquired in a package, but I don't see the Flyers as sellers. Yes, that would make much more sense for Toronto if it was possible.

I doubt that Florida lets Forsling get away, and he probably appreciates the tax ramifications of being a Panther (especially vis-a-vis Ontario).

The Kings are embarking on a six-game road trip, all of which are against playoff hopefuls. I don't think it is a make-or-break scenario this early in the season (it only carries them to the exact halfway point), but a total collapse would be extremely worrying.

With Brandt Clarke leading the Ontario Reign in scoring, I wonder when they'll try to work him into the lineup. And, how.

May God bless you and yours in 2024.

I saw some of Brandt when he was playing in Barrie. He's having a great scoring in the AHL, which is surprising for virtually any Dman now. Next Saturday, I'm going to Mexico for two weeks. Probably going to miss the NHL playoffs and the Leafs western Canadian road swing. Hoping to keep track on line.

Best wishes in the New Year. Hey maybe we'll see a Kings/Leafs final this June.....like 1993 (well semi final)
