The Only Way Oilers Entertain Elvis

Description
READ DESCRIPTION:

Unless the Colombus Blue Jackets magically want to take on Campbell and a very minimal pay load while trading Elvis, I do not think that the Oilers are the right fit here. This would be the only deal I'd maybe consider if I was Edmonton because everyone knows its below on what teams want to take on Campbell. So unless this happens, were going for a backup to backup Skinner like a Vladar or Blackwood.

Reason for this low load is Elvis's numbers have not been great for the past 2 and a half years, and his contract is exspensive, if the Oilers try and trade something like this, you could potentially be in Campbell situation 2.0 if he doesn't work out! Goalies are voodoo and unless its a very low offer in terms of payment from the Oil, it aint happening.

"Unless the Colombus Blue Jackets magically want to take on Campbell and a very minimal pay load while trading Elvis..." Yeah, that's the only way it makes sense for Edmonton, I don't know who's arguing otherwise in good faith?

The price to dump Campbell is probably just short of a 1st, and the price to buy Elvis given the context of his deal is probably no more than a mid-round pick or equivalent prospect. I don't like the idea of Columbus retaining on Elvis for 4 years as I've seen elsewhere, I'd rather see a lighter return than retention since the deals are so similar.

As you have it here, that's pretty close to an even deal IMO. No need to complicate it unless you want to swap UFAs like Bean and Foegele to make the cap hits more even (and add picks to even out).

Are Adolf Hitler and Jimmy Hoffa invited? Elvis can sing Viva Las Vegas.

All 3 are still alive!

Dumping Campbell is definitely more than a 1st or it would have been done already

And dumping Elvis without salary retention will cost the BJ's a bribe also.

Elvis is dead.

That's might be true, but I don't know that it's so much more than a 1st that the proposed trade is out of the realm of possibility. A 1st is often a contending team's most valuable fluid asset halfway through the season...spending it to dump a player, especially when you (as the GM) signed the deal originally, isn't something you'd do quickly or unless you're 100% sure.

No the trade is fine. But Jack probably costs 2 1sts to dump. Elvis probably a bit less than 1

We used different formulas and ended up with the same answer.

Since Elvis is about league-average, I'd argue he's not a cap dump, just an inefficient use of cap. He's one of 11 other goalies making between 5 and 6 million this year and only the 11th-highest cap hit for goalies in the league. Hell, he's not even $2M more expensive than the 32nd-highest paid goalie in the league. I'd put his value at mid-to-late round pick, and think it's probably short of a 1st to dump Campbell for similar reasons.

Just an explanation of how I'm looking at it, it's pretty subjective.

A trade like this would make no sense for the Oilers. Skinner is the starter and oilers need a 1b goalie in 1 to 2 million$ range. You don't get rid of a bad contract + assets to take on another bad contract!

Fair enough. From looking at historical comps (especially more recent ones), recent UFA contracts (Jarry, Helle, Sorokin, etc), goalie draft positions, etc

I think goaltender values are lower than they’ve ever been.

Goalies are getting traded for less than ever, getting contracts smaller than they were 5 years ago, and getting drafted later and later every year.

Jarry and Elvis for example have identical contracts basically. Jarry was just signed as a UFA, so I’m saying he’s approximately market value. And since Elvis has MUCH worse results than Jarry did when he signed that deal, he’s gonna cost to dump at least imo
