Dream Deadline

Created by: mvp13
Team: 2023-24 Dallas Stars
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 15, 2024
Published: Jan. 15, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
NOTE: I am aware the team is over the cap on paper here. But, as long as I properly understand "trade deadline cap space" (as of today, TDL cap is 1.9mil, while projected cap is only 400k), they should have accrued more than enough cap to make this happen. Otherwise, they can send Hanley to the minors or try to get additional retention on one of these trades. But it shouldn't be necessary.

Trade reasonings are in the notes. Honestly, I'm not really sure the team needs to do anything; they already have arguably the best depth in the league, especially with the emergence of Harley this year. But if they do make some moves, I think this would make them "perfect".

Swap Harley and Suter as needed. That's really the only interchangeable aspect of this lineup.
Trades
1.
DAL
  1. Tanev, Christopher ($2,250,000 retained)
CGY
  1. Lundkvist, Nils
Additional Details:
The Nils experiment comes to a close. He's been outplayed by Joel Hanley this year and last year. He didn't play a game in the playoffs last year. Hopefully DAL can convince CGY there is still some upside here to not have to also add a pick to the trade. But if necessary, DAL adds in a a 2024 2nd or 2025 3rd.
2.
DAL
  1. Maroon, Patrick
Additional Details:
I think DAL should have done the trade with TBL in the offseason. DAL got bitched around last year in the playoffs. Benn is a tough customer, but he takes it too far and gets overly penalized or suspended whenever he responds. DAL needs someone physical in the playoffs. They nearly lost to MIN last year because they got out-bodied. This trade also only happens if MIN does indeed miss the playoffs.
MIN
  1. Dellandrea, Ty
Additional Details:
I realize this can be seen as an overpay, but Dellandrea just isn't panning out. With Stankyoven and Bourque waiting in the wings for the next shot, I don't think Dellandrea will ever see full action when the lineup is healthy. It's a slight overpay given DAL is trading with a rival. But I don't think DAL will miss anything here.

Maroon would be a great addition for Dallas. Hes worth about a 5th if the paying team is getting absolutely robbed. He could be had for less, especially with the way Minnesota's season is trending. I'm sure someone would pay much more to acquire Dellandrea despite his play this season. Give up a 6th or 7th for Maroon and Minnesota probably accepts if they're still out of the race come late February

The lack of top 4 defenceman on the market it likely to up Tanev's price but quite a bit.

I expect him to bring back a first and there are many teams that are willing to pay that price. Therefore, I can't see this offer cutting it unfortunately.

I think the most DAL would comfortably add would be the 2024 2nd. I think that plus Lundkvist would be more than fair.

He's been pretty darn good this year, on pace to double his point totals last year, and surprass his point totals the last couple. I think that would boost his value a little. I'm just not sure what kind of value Dellandrea would have anymore. He's been given so many chances. The NHL is letting all this talent pass through waivers and leave the League nowadays with all the youngins coming up. I can't imagine anyone giving up much for Dellandrea at this point. And if MIN is out, I think there would be a massive bidding war for Maroon, so that factors into the bit of an overpayment there as well. I think at the very most, Dellandrea would be worth a 2nd, and I think that Maroon is trending to be worth that as well. I think the only reason TBL let him go for peanuts is he had a down year last year and most probably thought he was on his way out, but he sure turned the page this season so far

Flames should get a first from another team easily. Lundkvist will probably be waiver worthy soon.

Meh, we all say this every year and then it doesn't happen. I think a prospect with NHL experience and a 2nd is more than enough for a rental that will play 3rd pair on any contending team

EDIT: I should clarify, another team may offer a 1st and a 1st alone, I suppose it's up to CGY which offer is better. They literally can't plunge into a full rebuild, so a retool is better. I think hoping Nils can continue to grow lends itself more to a retool. He can immediately QB the PP. Who knows what a late 1st would be
