Step One Deadline Deals

Created by: TheGoalieGuru

Initial Creation Date: Jan. 16, 2024

Description
Trades:

The Caps need goals and Vlad controls his own destiny. Washington is a logical landing spot for a goal scoring Russian.

The idea of trading Chychrun is sickening but I just don’t think he will extend with the Sens and his value at a deadline when teams overpay will be massive.

EDM easily says no if we wanted chychrun we would have got him last year we aren’t gonna overpay and pay more than what the sens got him for

I'd do the trade if they changed the first to 2025, and took out one of broberg and bourgoult.

I doubt that the Caps are going to be in a position to buy, especially at the expense of Lapierre and a second rounder. If the Caps were to deal a prospect/pick, it'd be for a younger full-time NHLer that either has term on their contract, or has team control through restricted free agency. Any trade to bring in a player that will play significant minutes will look a lot more like the Sandin trade with Toronto last year instead of Tarasenko on an expiring contract.

Bourgoult out and to 2025 and I agree. They can have Broberg.

Caps aren’t interested in tarasenko. They are too much of a bubble team to be looking at older rentals

He is a LH dman, but has extensive experience playing on the right side.
All this being said, I'd prefer someone who is more defensively responsible, so he can play with Nurse. I don't think Chychrun fits that bill now.

Trade deadline deals usually are overpayments because teams are desperate to make a move before the playoffs. It’s why you see moves like Chiarot, Foligno, And many others.

There are countless examples at every deadline. Tyler Toffoli to Calgary is another recent one. Just last year you had Tampa overpay for Jeannot, Toronto overpay for Jake McCabe, and LA overpay for Gavrikov.

Here’s some historic examples:

Bob Lorimer and Dave Cameron from NYI to Colorado Rockies (Devils) for the Devils 1st rounder, which was used to pick Pat Lafontaine.

Jerry Korab from Buffalo to LA in exchange for LA’s first, which became Phil Housley.
