Honestly, I don't hate this idea. Obviously from the Pens side this only makes sense if Jake doesn't plan on extending, but this does make some sense.

Agree, That was the basis that he wouldn't resign, and Leafs don't want to pay Marner 12+...

I can imagine Kyle Dubas being 🤬 with this trade.

As a Leaf fan, I wouldn't mind the trade. But let's not talk about extensions. Gotta think the Leafs can spend (whatever 30 year old Guentzel would want) better value players.
Same with Marner and Tavares if they are still Leafs at the end of the 24/25 season. Certainly no urgency to spend about 18 to 20m on those two guys.....Just find other players even if it's good long term deals on your own RFAs.

Just because JG will sign for less than marner doesnt make it a good thing. He's older, not as remotely good defensively and will still be getting the pay me or i walk bump, throw in that he's american and may not even want to play in Toronto and there is, at best, no value saved here for the leafs.
Not to mention rielly smith's cap hit is pretty high foe what he brings and would take a sweetener and a half for a cap team
