Why not? You'd have to move VV but you get him for 3 playoff runs. He probably helps the team more than Holtz in those 3 years, right? he only has 1 negative GSAx season in the last 5 (20-21) and is particularly strong at high-danger chances (which we allow on a per-shot basis more than most teams iirc) and weak against low-danger chances (which we do a good job of limiting)
Age 34 to 36 goaltenders have a BAD track record. It’s very rare that they’re even competent starters throughout the run, let alone quality goaltending that can win you the cup.
This year going forward I expect him to play like a borderline top 10 goalie.
After that it’s a crapshoot if he’s even good at all.
My approximate valuations:
This year: 8 mill
Next year: 4.5 mill
2 years from now: 3.5 mill
Total value: 16 million. At 18 mill in salary tbh I wouldn’t pay much at all for him.
My estimations of holtz
This year: 3 million
Next year: 5 million
2 years from now: 6 mill
6.5 mill
7 mill
Total value: 27.5
Assume we get him on a 3.5x3 bridge contract, that’s a total cost of 12.5 million.
Even if I’m way off on my estimations there’s a MASSIVE gap in value.
In order for trading Holtz for Markstrom to be a good idea, holtz would have to not improve at all going forward, and Markstrom would have to maintain a historically unprecedented level of play from age 34-36.
