Quoting: tupty
So because Matty Beniers was playing well in the NHL at age 19, the new rule of thumb is that if a guy doesn't crack the NHL roster by age 19 then the team needs cut bait on the player? Good god, man, get a grip!
Also, why wouldn't you play your developing 20 year old on the NHL team? You might be right that they don't trust him, but he is developing. You don't develop as fast when you are constantly getting benched in close games and averaging 7 minutes TOI a night. You develop when you are building your confidence by regularly getting points while playing 15+ minutes a night. And if he wants to make more money, then he needs to make sure he is doing everything he can to earn his spot.
Like I said, you might be right that they might not be high on him. But cutting bait on a #4 overall pick when he is only 20 years old is a more fireable offense for a GM than making a bad pick in a draft year that was particularly crapshoot-y. There is no rush to trade a young guy on an ELC.
look at you thinking a guy who was given exceptional player status needs "confidence" egg shell walking.
Or to think he should be played 7 minutes a night and is going to get constantly benched.
This is all part of the issue, and like I said, why I think he's going to ask out at this rate.
If anything, sitting him rotting in the AHL is probably more detrimental for his confidence than playing him. Especially when the choices of people you are passing by him are very poor and your giving opportunity to others who frankly were no more or less prepared than he is. If you somehow think Matty B was leaps and bounds ahead of Wright to "earn" his place you are mistaken. What Matty had was leverage. Play me or I go back to Michigan and in 2 years walk. Wright didn't have that leverage so they shoved him in the AHL. They aren't giving him the same opportunity period.
Which brings me back to the whole not high on him. You think it's "cutting bait" on a guy but when you aren't high on him that's not how they see it.
It's not cutting bait on a guy when you get a 40 goal 1st line winger in return. You are hoping Wright develops into that level of player. Not the other way around.
In general the trend in the NHL is to play the younger talent. Benson in BUF playing first year, he was the 13th overall in the last draft.
Younger players are getting more and more opportunity.
Of the top 7 players in Wright's draft. That's 3 up and 3 down from him.
2 are not in the NHL right now. Wright and Gauthier, who is not signed and in the NCAA. Which isn't a good sign for ANA but that's a different story.
You went on a hell bent rage but anyone looking at the context can see something here is off. He should be getting his chance. He's not. That says both A. the organization is not high on him, and B. the player at some point is going to be more frustrated in the AHL than in the NHL developing.
So instead of making his 900k a year, he's making 82k a year. I'm sure that's not really making him happy and everyone else around him got opportunity but him.
Instead some pretty low performing players are getting his ice time.
At some point that comes to a head. If they don't have faith in him, moving him isn't an issue.
