For all the sellers

Created by: pens1991
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 12, 2024
Published: Feb. 12, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
For all the fans saying to sell, the team has mostly no value.

Rust = NMC
Rakell = bad contract at 30
Graves = bad contract
Smith = large cap hit + NTC
Eller/Acciari = no reason to move either, not making a difference with $2M in cap
Carter = Retiring and not waiving NMC
Ek = Not trading
Core three = not trading + letang/malkin have no value at this point in their career

Ned/Pettersson/Jake only value.

**Using ANA in these examples because they're top on the list. **
Trades
1.
PIT
ANA
  1. Guentzel, Jake
Additional Details:
Jake has the most trade value on the penguins right now.

If they want to trade him it will be a 1st + young (under 23) forward that currently has NHL experience and maybe another prospect/higher pick
2.
PIT
ANA
  1. Pettersson, Marcus
Additional Details:
Pettersson is one of the better Shutdown guys in the league and on good aav for another season.

If they decided to sell him he should be able to bring back a high pick + Prospect
3.
PIT
ANA
  1. Nedeljkovic, Alex
Additional Details:
with the way he's played this season + his AAV he should be able to fetch a 2nd or 3rd.
4.
PIT
ANA
  1. Smith, Reilly
Additional Details:
Best case scenario here is the penguins find a hockey trade, two struggling players around similar AAVs

otherwise not an easy way to move him with his cap hit + NTC. (would assume most teams with cap space are also on his NTC, CHI, ANA, BUF, etc)
5.
PIT
ANA
  1. Rust, Bryan
Additional Details:
Full NMC, so you'd first need him to waive which I am not sure if he would. If he does it would only be for a select few teams which means those teams would low ball because they know the penguins hands are tied. Rust stays, but just showing here that it would be next to impossible to get much of a return because of his current situation.
6.
PIT
ANA
  1. Rakell, Rickard
Additional Details:
Probably the hardest player to move. Having a very bad year after coming off of a strong year last year. New 5 year deal at $5M and is 30 currently. Not sure any team will want to take that deal on with the season Rakell is having. The penguins would most likely need to pay to move Rakell or again find a hockey trade (which just means they're getting another bad contract in return)
7.
PIT
ANA
  1. Graves, Ryan
Additional Details:
Having a very down year. Still seems like some teams/fans would be interested given his size but with the season he's having + the new contract it feels pretty difficult to move.

I've come to many of the same conclusions when thinking about what this team might do. Realistically, they're not trading Crosby, and as long as he's there they're not trading Letang or Malkin. And you can't start a rebuild and keep those guys around. Guentzel and maybe a few other small assets are the only moveable pieces.

The hardest pill to swallow is if the team had league average powerplay, and Smith and Rakell didn't nose dive the pens are easily sitting in the playoffs with the combined goaltending they're getting, penalty kill, faceoffs and 5v5 play.

14 one goal losses on the season.

The only team Bryan Rust goes to is Home Town Detroit, As he was going to sign there before he decided to re-up with Pittsburgh which is going to be a major mistake.

I'm sure he'd waive for other contenders, so I doubt it'd be only one team.
