I could be off on this, but I'd imagine CGY would want Schmid over Vanecek.

conny wants a retool and I cant see him sending marky away. the guy fills the hole that you cant really replace by trade return and hes a goalie that you can rely on. with that i think only hani gets dealt.

Do you think this trade will happen at the Trade Deadline?

NJ will send an offer, not sure how crazy and desperate they get but if conroy sees a return that he cant decline its just up to marky to waive the ntc. time will tell though

TBH I love Jacob Markstrom, but trading him is going to hurt this Calgary Flames team.
We'll have to wait and see on March 8.

Close but still a bit light. Make it Mercer instead of Holtz.

Last year, Dimitri Orlov was traded for a 1st, a 2nd, a 3rd, and an NHL body

Two years ago, Hampus Lindholm was traded for a 1st, two 2nds, a prospect, and an NHL body.

Imo a 1st+Holtz is nor enough for Hanifin, and a 1st+Vanacek is not even close for Markstrom

Let’s analyze these trades:
Orlov 1st+2nd+3rd
Craig Smith: cap dump, 3rd round pick
Now we’re down to 1st+2nd
Don’t forget the retention+Getting Garnett Hathaway. That’s a second

So Orlov fetched a 1st.

Now to the Lindholm deal:

It had a 2 year AHL 5+ mill cap dump in it+ retention.
And there go the pair of 2nds

Later 1st+Vaak is approximately equal to just NJDs 1st currently 15th overall

Not even considering holtz, who when SJS asked for were told “if holtz, then only holtz”

24 1st for Hanifin unretained lines up with comps there. But we’ll throw in a Kevin bahl to match Vaak.

25 1st for Markstrom+3rd+4th. I would consider but would probably pass as NJD.

Take out holtz and it’s closer

Incorrect. Boston gave up an extra 5th for Minnesota to retain.

A cap dump in the final year of their contract making $3+ for a 3rd round pick? interesting. Let's keep that in mind for later.

Now you're just making stuff up. John Moore was in the final year of his deal and his cap hit was $2.75m. At worst this was a 1st, a 2nd, and Vaakanainen for Lindholm with retention.

So that means it's a 2nd round pick for a cap dump that was making less than $3m on the final year of their deal. Interesting. Let's keep that in mind for later.

And what happens when New Jersey goes from disastrous goaltending (team save % .884) to potential Vezina caliber goaltending (.916)? That 15th overall pick suddenly isn't going to be a 15th overall pick.

And?

New Jersey doesn't hold any of the cards here, Calgary does. They don't need to trade Markstrom for several more years, if at all, and will have plenty of other options when trading Hanifin. You guys are the contender that is on the verge of missing the playoffs bc you can't get a save and your best defenseman is out. If you don't want to waste another year of Hughes cheap cap hit, it will cost you.

And what about the cap dump for Vanacek? This year AND next at $3.4m? If John Moore (1yr @ $2.75) cost a 2nd, well, that's at least two 2nds for New Jersey.

25 1st for Markstrom+3rd+4th.

Darcy Kuemper (w/$1m retention) went for a 1st, a 3rd, and a prospect. He's not as good as Markstrom and was in the final year of his contract. If I'm Calgary, I wouldn't trade 2+ years of Markstrom for a 1st straight up, let alone add to it.

Vanacek: .890% behind a Stanley Cup contender
Markstrom: .916% behind a bubble team

You'd pass on that? Seriously?

Boston gave up the 5th for double retention. Washington retained 50% of the deal. Minnesota retained 25%.

Yeah Craig smith cost approximately a 3rd to dump. I could just lump Hathaway+Retention+taking on the dump as=2nd+3rd if you want tho.

John more had 2 years left on his deal at 2.75. 2.75x2=5.5 mill last I checked. His deal expired at the end of 22-23. He was traded in 21-22. Purely an AHLer.

NJD holds most of the cards. Markstrom is a ticking time bomb for age, injury, and regression. Happy to play that game of chicken. Every day you wait is 1 more day closer to Freddy Andersen being back. If he comes back and looks good your list of potential buyers for unretained Markstrom hits 0. You already lost LAK now that Arvidsson is back. And even retained are they gonna send him to Brad Treliving in Toronto or their biggest rivals in Edmonton?

Vanacek is an NHL goalie who I’d expect to get about 2x2 million on the open market. Would pay a 3rd to dump him but he’s been better lately, and especially if retention is off the table we’ll just keep him anyway as insurance.

I’d rather have 1 year of 31 year old Kuemper at 3.4 mill than 3 years of 34-36 year old Markstrom at 6 mil

Trading for Markstrom does not go back in time and give us his starts and change the standings retroactively. The stupidest thing you can do is pay for what a player has done in the past.

Markstrom is 34 years old
He will make the 8th most money over the next 3 years (assuming Saros extension is 8+ million)
I can think of quite a few more than 8 goalies I’d rather have over the next 3 years than Markstrom.
