New Approach

Created by: fangm
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 13, 2024
Published: Feb. 13, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Kakko, Kaapo
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (NYR)
NYR
  1. 2024 1st round pick (TOR)
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
With rumours that:
1. NYR have been listening on Kakko
2. NYR owner won't let them trade their 1st

This deal makes loads of sense. The 1st from Toronto allows them to pickup a 1RW like Tarasenko or to go after Guentzel if Pit trades him. Then Wheeler can drop down to the 3rd line in Kakko's spot.
2.
TOR
  1. Hakanpää, Jani
  2. 2024 1st round pick (DAL)
DAL
  1. Liljegren, Timothy
Additional Details:
Similar to the Sandin trade last year.
3.
TOR
  1. Andersson, Rasmus ($2,250,000 retained)
CGY
  1. Abruzzese, Nick
  2. Niemelä, Topi
  3. 2024 1st round pick (DAL)
  4. 2024 2nd round pick (NYR)
  5. 2026 1st round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
This is the most I can find in a trade for a D. Yes there is retention and other factors but its more than Lindholm, Jones or anyone else has been traded for. Hard to see Calgary turning this down.

They get two 1sts, 2nd, a RHD who likely steps into their lineup next year and a forward prospect who light up the NCAA playing with Coronato so they have a chance to play together again.

All for a player who could walk before they are even competitive. I feel like Flames fans don't consider enough the possibility that this team doesn't compete for the next 1/2 years and suddenly Andersson is a pending UFA who might want to go to a playoff team and you got two years of worse picks then half this package for him in future.

Why would Dallas do that? You ref Washington but how is that a comp? Take the 1st out and I guess you could make a case, maybe…hmm…not even imo.

How is it not a comp? Sandin went for a 1st and Gustafson. Liligren who is likely worth a little more is being traded for essentially the same package.

For that package you get fired for turning it down.

Not unprecedented. Chicago did it on McCabe last year. Similar amount for 3 years.

In terms of real money it's actually almost identical to McCabe since his contract is back loaded.

Why would Dallas give a big D who has played in the playoffs PLUS a first for a guy who disappears right about now, or sooner?

The deal makes no sense for Dallas, even without the 1st?

Washington was gonzo when they made that deal…

Liligren is worth a 1st and 3rd he's a #3 for the next 7 years for a team.

If you want to argue Hakanpaa's value that's fine or if you want to argue the fit with Dallas you can but Lili's value isn't really debatable. People were having these arguments a year ago and the Sandin trade shows that this is clearly the value of a young 2nd pairing D.

Fair enough but I don't think any team offers this much without the retention.

Depending on who you ask it's 3-4 firsts worth of value.

Disagree, and I’m sure as does Dallas and most if not every other team…especially this time of year.

And what does worth mean? How does Liljegren help Dallas?

Answer a question?

Even if he was available (you're right he isn't) Calgary wouldn't retain salary.

Calgary has retained salary exactly once. A deadline deal with 50% retention on David Rittich's expiring contract which had an AAV of just 2.75 mil.
