Initial Creation Date: Feb. 18, 2024
Published: Feb. 18, 2024

Description
The draft being decentralized is really dumb, because having the draft is one thing that is really fun about the NHL as compared to other leagues. For the last real draft I want the hawks to have another first round pick, but it needs to make sense. Hopefully the Murphy trade accomplishes that.

My draft strategy is pretty dependent on the way the lottery falls. I am currently penciling the hawks in for a top 3 pick, but that could change depending on lottery luck. My wishlist is Celebrini/Leshunov/Lindstrom in the middle of the round via Tampa I would try and grab a D, potentially Adam Jiricek, and near the end I of the round I would go for Tanner Howe.

Trading Murphy for Ceci here to open up an NHL roster spot next season. Ethan Del Maestro Kaiser Allan all are LD vying for the last LD slot with Korchinsky and Vlasic. If one of those players can prove they are better than Ceci in that RD spot while Rinzel develops would be huge.

Man, the Canucks would have to swallow hard to do that deal. I still don't think Vancouver's problem is with scoring, so I'm not sure if JG is the answer to their playoff success. They need shutdown defensemen. Knowing Patrick Allvin's love of former Penguins players though, I'd say that he would do this.

That's not the Giourx deal if it's a 1st and a prospect. Pens decline.

Flyers got a first and Tippett who at the time of the trade had already played nearly 100 games in the NHL.

So if Jake goes to Van it needs to be something like a 1st, Hoglander, Prospect

Yes, I know. The roster spot this trade frees up is the Top 4 RD spot… Ceci fits into Zaitsev’s spot. Maybe confusing how I worded it.

He can still be traded as long as he is healthy for the acquiring teams playoffs.

JG is electric in the playoffs. Him on Vancouver would be insane.

I think you are asking too much there. Owen Tippett was not as highly regarded as Hoglander is now. In any case I don’t have a dog in the race so as long as the hawks get the retention pick I don’t really care what they agree on.

PIT is not paying for CHI to double retain on Guentzel, VAN is paying. So why would CHI take a pick from PITs return for Guentzel? Which, mind you, isn’t enough to begin with.

LOL!!! Thank God we have him too. I'd like to see us add Nick Seeler, he's a shot blocking machine.

Guentzel is younger than Claude during the trade, better playoff player. Plus the 1st is 2025 cause VAN already used the 24. All adds up.

That's the only way the pens do the deal.

If the pens can get a better deal, and the hawks still get the 4th rounder, then that’s great for the penguins. Personally, I think a first and a prospect is right for what the penguins are actually selling… JG without an extension while he is hurt, but there is little investment in this debate for me. In any case if JG would get the penguins more than what I have conveyed here then thanks for letting me know for future posts.

I was going to write more but then I got distracted by something else and then came back to my computer and was like "Oh. I wrote something. I'll hit submit." And then I realized that I probably came off like a jerk zeroing in on one little thing. But, overall, interesting acgm. I don't think that is enough for third party retention, though. But it would still be cool to get in on one of the big trades as a broker.

Not sure which direction you are leaning on the retention issue, too much/not enough… but just as something I think is valuable to bring up anyways… I think real money is more indicative of a 3rd party return than cap hit retained. I think I heard that somewhere, maybe 32 thoughts… who knows. In any case the real money being paid to JG is much higher than what Kane was making at this time last Yearwhen considering signing bonuses. Arizona got a 3rd for retaining 25% of Kanes remaining salary. Maybe I’m not asking enough here, as we would be paying more for a 4th than Arizona did for a third… but there could be other circumstances. In any case, the hawks may end up getting better value for their retention slot than they would for trading TJ at 50% to the highest bidder.

Yeah. The 4th is definitely not enough, in my opinion. Should be at least a 3rd, if not more.

I feel like there is a threshold for 3rd party teams. Normally it’s a 4th, 5th, or later pick. Arizona is the exception, but I hope Chicago gets better than a 4th.

Sure. But there are even less teams this season with the ability to retain, and even more teams who need cap space. Though, there are also less trade candidates for this years deadline. But, I don't think we do it for anything less than a 3rd. There's no reason. A 4th round pick has a slim chance of even getting an ELC, and we shouldn't broker a trade just for the sake of doing it. So, just show some backbone and don't budge. Someone will either give us assets that actually help our rebuild, or they won't.

Also, the retention on Kane last year was $250k in actual salary, it might've even been less than that, I can't remember, whereas 25% retention on Guentzel would be 2 times as much at $500k.
