You know if you sign and trade Hanifin with retention you’d be paying half his salary for the next 8 years right?

What I meant was retained 50% of his expiring Contract

You know retention doesn't carry over to multiple contracts, right?

Retention Is only for the expiring contract.. Not the newly signed and trade

I understand that. That's what I was saying, it wouldn't carry over to the new contract

It carries over to contract extensions. So if you sign Hanifin, you own his rights for the next 9 years. Then, if you trade him with 50% retention, you will be retaining for the duration of those 9 years. That’s why Hampus Lindholm didn’t sign his new contract with Boston for a day. Because if he signed it while still on anaheim, Anaheim would have been responsible for 50% of it when they traded him with 50% retention

It does

Retention applies to entire contract at time of trade (same % to earth year of remaining term at time of deal). An extension done prior to trade would be considered part of that contract (it’s not a new contract, it’s an extension to existing contract). Examples:

-- If Hanifin extends tomorrow, then traded next week, the % retained to count towards all years including extension.

-- If Hanifin does not sign extension, is traded with 50% retention, that applies to 2023-24 only.

-- If Markstrom is traded with 25% retention, that means 25% for remaining 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-25.

To retain one year, you’d have to trade him as pure rental before March 8th, then anytime between March 8th and July 1st, he would be eligible to sign 8-year term while with new team.

“Something brewing between these two teams” ….is there something new, in last 24 hours? Is this round 3?

I haven’t seen anything, but I haven’t looked in last day either. Last I saw was the LeBrun report that said they may talk again, but Fitzy had started engaging with a couple of other teams about goalies.

actually in the NHL is is a new contract, because when they introduced the salary cap they also put in a rule about renegotiating contracts, also there is a rule stating contracts are a maximum of 8 years. We may call them extensions, but based on teh CBA they are new contracts.

Not sure what this meant. I think some words were cut out.

If one has an extension, and is traded with retention, that % applies to current contract and extension. For that, I am sure.

Extensions in the NHL are not actually extensions. They are new contracts, because the CBA does not allow the renegotiation of contracts and an extension would be a renegotiation of both term and dollars. There is a reason this very site lists so called extensions as new contracts and lists the date the new contract was signed.

You are 100% wrong.
